Top 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Federico Valverde

He Played in Diapers as a Three-Year-Old

Federico Valverde’s football journey started incredibly early. He began playing “baby fútbol” at just three years old for the club Estudiantes de la Unión. He was so small that he would wear diapers under his shorts during matches. A star who started with diapers and dreams, literally learning to walk and play at the same time.

He Was Ashamed of His Family’s Poverty

Growing up in a working-class Montevideo family, his father a security guard, his mother a flea market seller, Valverde felt deep shame about their struggles. He remembers only having three free-to-air TV channels and sleeping on a mattress on the floor in a dark room. He was embarrassed to invite teammates over because they couldn’t afford pay-TV.

He Literally Dreamed of Playing for Real Madrid

Federico Valverde didn’t just aspire to play for Real Madrid. He literally dreamed about it. As a boy in Montevideo, he would dream of wearing the famous white shirt. That childhood dream became a reality when he signed for the club in 2016 for around €5 million. A dream that started in his sleep, fulfilled on the pitch.

He Turned Down Arsenal After a ‘Hostage’ Trial

At just 16, Valverde travelled to London for a trial with Arsenal. However, he felt completely out of place – describing it as feeling like a “hostage.” The cold climate, the language barrier, and being away from his family in sunny Uruguay made him deeply uncomfortable, so he turned down the move. A trial that felt like a prison.

Real Madrid Called Him in a Hotel Room, and He Almost Didn’t Answer

While in Paraguay for the Under-17 Copa América, Valverde was in his hotel room when his mother called him to another room. Some people wanted to talk to him. He refused at first, but his mother insisted. That call was from Real Madrid’s chief scout, Juni Calafat, offering him a move to the Spanish capital. A call that changed everything.

He Once Made a Racist Gesture and Had to Apologize

At the 2017 Under-20 World Cup in South Korea, Valverde scored against Portugal and celebrated by making a “slant-eyed” gesture. The act was widely condemned as racist, and he had to issue a rapid apology. Fortunately for him, Real Madrid did not lose interest in the talented youngster. A moment of youthful ignorance he quickly regretted.

He Suffered from a ‘Star Complex’ After His First Contract

When Federico Valverde turned professional with Peñarol at 16, he admits he let the fame go to his head. He felt like he was “a God” and believed he was already on the level of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. He would spend his money shopping after every training session, buying things he could never afford before. A teenager who got lost in his own hype.

He Was Once Loaned Out, and Took It Badly

In 2017, Real Madrid sent Valverde on loan to Deportivo La Coruña. He took it as a huge blow, asking: “How could they send me down to a team with a lower status, when I was a talent?” However, the game time proved invaluable, helping him reach a new level. He was also coached by Clarence Seedorf for half a season. A loan that humbled and shaped him.

He Holds the Record for the Fastest Shot in La Liga

Federico Valverde possesses a thunderous right foot. During a 2020 match against Celta Vigo, he recorded a shot at an astonishing 104 km/h (65 mph), the fastest ever recorded in La Liga history. A rocket of a right foot that literally broke speed records. A shot that defenders fear and fans marvel at.

He’s an Avid History Reader and Environmentalist

Off the field, Valverde is full of surprises. He loves reading history books and helps protect the environment in Uruguay by working with local charities. He is a player who cares about the past, fights for the planet, and always wants more out of life than just winning soccer games.
