The T20 Mumbai League is a domestic franchise-based Twenty20 cricket tournament organised under the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). The league was created to give Mumbai’s local cricketers a bigger platform and help identify players who could progress to higher levels of domestic and professional cricket.

The competition began in 2018 with six teams. It returned for a second season in 2019 with eight teams before taking a long break. The league came back in 2025 and has since continued as an important part of Mumbai’s domestic cricket calendar.

The tournament has featured several players who later became important names in Indian cricket, including Suryakumar Yadav, Prithvi Shaw and Shivam Dube. The 2025 and 2026 editions also gave a platform to several emerging Mumbai players.

What Is the T20 Mumbai League?

The T20 Mumbai League is a city-based T20 competition featuring players registered with the Mumbai Cricket Association. Its main purpose is to provide competitive cricket to Mumbai players and create another pathway for talented cricketers to gain attention.

The league was officially launched in 2018. The original competition featured six teams representing different areas of Mumbai, with matches played at Wankhede Stadium. Sachin Tendulkar was named the league ambassador, while Sunil Gavaskar served as commissioner and Dilip Vengsarkar was appointed chief mentor.

The league was also designed around local talent rather than overseas players. The 2018 player registration rules specifically focused on cricketers eligible to represent the Mumbai Cricket Association in BCCI competitions.

History of the T20 Mumbai League

T20 Mumbai League 2018

The first edition was played from March 11 to March 21, 2018. Six teams competed in the tournament, with all matches taking place at Wankhede Stadium.

The six original franchises were North Mumbai Panthers, ARCS Andheri, NaMo Bandra Blasters, Shivaji Park Lions, SoBo SuperSonics and Triumph Knights Mumbai North East.

Several well-known Mumbai cricketers were linked with the teams. Ajinkya Rahane, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Rohit Sharma, Abhishek Nayar and Siddhesh Lad were among the prominent names involved in the first edition.

Triumph Knights Mumbai North East won the inaugural title. They defeated Shivaji Park Lions by three runs in a close final at Wankhede Stadium. Triumph Knights scored 182/5, while Shivaji Park Lions finished on 179/8.

Shivam Dube was one of the major performers of the first season. His performances in the tournament helped raise his profile, and he was later picked for the IPL. He also became an important Mumbai all-rounder and eventually represented India.

T20 Mumbai League 2019

The second season became bigger, with the number of teams increasing from six to eight. Two new teams were added, representing the Mumbai Western Suburbs and Eastern Suburbs.

The eight teams were divided into two groups of four. Each team played three matches against teams from the other group and two matches within its own group. The top two teams from each group qualified for the semi-finals.

The final was played at Wankhede Stadium on May 26, 2019. North Mumbai Panthers defeated SoBo SuperSonics by 12 runs after scoring 143/7 and restricting their opponents to 131. Atif Attarwala was named Player of the Match, while Prithvi Shaw was named Player of the Series.

The 2019 season also featured several players who went on to become familiar names in Indian cricket. Prithvi Shaw was among the biggest attractions, while the tournament continued to serve as a platform for Mumbai’s young players.

Why Did the T20 Mumbai League Take a Break?

After the 2019 season, the competition did not continue annually. The league was absent for several years before returning in 2025.

The long gap meant that the 2025 tournament effectively marked a new phase for the competition. The return gave Mumbai Cricket Association players another dedicated T20 platform after several years without the league.

The MCA restarted the competition in 2025, with player registration opening in April ahead of the third season.

T20 Mumbai League 2025

The T20 Mumbai League returned for its third edition in June 2025. Eight teams took part, with the tournament running from June 4 to June 12 after the schedule was adjusted because of changes to the IPL calendar.

Matches were played at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium.

The eight teams included Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs, ARCS Andheri, Bandra Blasters, Eagle Thane Strikers, Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals, North Mumbai Panthers, SoBo Mumbai Falcons and Triumph Knights Mumbai North East.

The tournament followed a league stage and knockout format, with the top four teams moving into the semi-finals.

2025 Final

The 2025 final was played at Wankhede Stadium between the Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals and the SoBo Mumbai Falcons.

SoBo Mumbai Falcons, led by Shreyas Iyer, scored 157/4 in 20 overs. Mayuresh Tandel made an unbeaten 50, while Harsh Aghav scored an unbeaten 45. The pair added 85 runs together from 49 balls to rescue the innings after the Falcons had slipped to 60/3.

Maratha Royals chased the target in 19.2 overs and won by five wickets. Chinmay Sutar anchored the chase with 53 from 49 balls, while Awais Naushad added 38 from 24 balls.

Siddhesh Lad was the Maratha Royals captain, and the victory gave the franchise its first T20 Mumbai League title. Sairaj Patil finished the tournament as Player of the Series.

Chinmay Sutar was also one of the leading performers of the tournament. He finished with 271 runs, while Siddhesh Lad scored 242. Sairaj Patil was third among the leading run-scorers with 233 runs. Shashank Attarde led the bowling charts with 11 wickets.

T20 Mumbai League 2026

The fourth season was held from June 1 to June 13, 2026. The men’s tournament again featured eight teams, while the MCA also introduced the inaugural T20 Mumbai Women’s League during the same period. Both competitions were staged at Wankhede Stadium.

The men’s teams were Aakash Tigers MWS, ARCS Andheri, Bandra Blasters, Eagle Thane Strikers, MSC Maratha Royals, North Mumbai Panthers, SoBo Mumbai Falcons and Triumph Knights MNE.

The 2026 season produced several high-scoring games and close finishes. Bandra Blasters captain Suved Parkar scored 110 from 54 balls against North Mumbai Panthers, reaching his century in only 46 deliveries. Despite his innings, the Panthers won the match in a Super Over.

ARCS Andheri also had a strong campaign, with Shivam Dube playing a key role. Divyaansh Sksena scored an unbeaten 88 from 39 balls against Eagle Thane Strikers as Andheri won by nine wickets.

2026 Final

The 2026 final was another meeting between MSC Maratha Royals and a different challenger, ARCS Andheri.

Maratha Royals scored 154/5 in their 20 overs. ARCS Andheri managed 146/8, giving the defending champions an eight-run victory at Wankhede Stadium.

The result made MSC Maratha Royals the first team to win the T20 Mumbai League twice. They had already won the 2025 edition and successfully defended their title in 2026.

MSC Maratha Royals are currently the only team to have won the competition twice. Triumph Knights Mumbai North East and North Mumbai Panthers have one title each.

The 2018 final was decided by three runs, while North Mumbai Panthers won the 2019 final by 12 runs. Maratha Royals won the 2025 final by five wickets and the 2026 final by eight runs.

T20 Mumbai League Format

The exact format has changed between editions as the league has developed.

The 2019 competition had eight teams divided into two groups of four. Each team played five league matches before the top two sides from each group reached the semi-finals.

In the recent editions, eight teams have played a league stage before the top four advanced to the semi-finals. The 2025 season featured 23 matches in total, including the league stage, semi-finals and final.

The 2026 edition also featured 23 men’s matches. The league stage was followed by two semi-finals and the final at Wankhede Stadium.

The competition follows standard T20 cricket rules, with teams playing 20-over innings unless a match is shortened because of weather or other conditions.

T20 Mumbai League Teams

The league has used different franchise names and territories over its history.

Some of the most familiar teams include:

  • North Mumbai Panthers
  • ARCS Andheri
  • Bandra Blasters
  • Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs
  • Eagle Thane Strikers
  • SoBo Mumbai Falcons
  • Triumph Knights Mumbai North East
  • MSC Maratha Royals

The names connect the franchises with different parts of Mumbai and the wider Mumbai cricket region.

The original 2018 competition was based around six geographical territories, while two more teams were added for the 2019 season.

Major Players to Come Through the League

Shivam Dube

Shivam Dube became one of the early breakout performers. He represented Shivaji Park Lions in the first season and was named Player of the Series in 2018. His performances helped him gain wider attention before his IPL career developed.

Dube later became an India international and has remained one of the better-known players associated with the competition.

Prithvi Shaw

Prithvi Shaw was one of the standout players in the 2019 edition. He was named Player of the Series after helping the North Mumbai Panthers win the title. He also scored 53 from 31 balls in a league match against NaMo Bandra Blasters.

Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav was one of the prominent names in the inaugural edition. He represented Triumph Knights Mumbai North East and was among the leading Mumbai players associated with the competition from its beginning.

The presence of established Mumbai players alongside younger cricketers was an important part of the league’s original concept.

Role of the T20 Mumbai League in Mumbai Cricket

Mumbai has one of India’s strongest domestic cricket systems, producing generations of Test and international players. The T20 Mumbai League adds another layer to that structure by giving players a competition focused specifically on the shortest format.

The tournament allows young cricketers to play alongside and against experienced Mumbai players. This can give emerging players exposure to high-pressure T20 cricket before they move into larger domestic or franchise competitions.

The league’s history also shows how this pathway can work. Shivam Dube became a major performer in the first season, while Prithvi Shaw was one of the leading players in the second edition. More recent seasons have provided opportunities to players such as Chinmay Sutar, Sairaj Patil, Shashank Attarde and other members of Mumbai’s domestic cricket pool.

T20 Mumbai League and the IPL

The T20 Mumbai League is not a replacement for the IPL, but it can act as an important scouting platform.

Mumbai produces a large number of professional cricketers, and a local T20 competition allows IPL scouts to watch players in a franchise-style environment. The competition also gives young players experience with team management, pressure situations and short-format tactics.

Shivam Dube’s rise after his performances in the inaugural season is one of the clearest examples of the league helping increase a player’s visibility.

The same pathway remains important as the league continues to feature players competing for places in Mumbai’s domestic teams and looking for opportunities in the IPL.

T20 Mumbai Women’s League

The MCA expanded the concept in 2026 by introducing the inaugural T20 Mumbai Women’s League.

The women’s tournament was held alongside the men’s competition at Wankhede Stadium. This gave Mumbai’s women cricketers a dedicated franchise-style T20 platform for the first time under the league structure.

SoBo Mumbai Falcons won the inaugural women’s title after defeating Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs by 25 runs. Captain Sayali Satghare led the Falcons to the historic victory.

The introduction of the women’s competition represents an important expansion of the T20 Mumbai League model and gives more local players an opportunity to perform in a high-profile domestic tournament.

Where Is the T20 Mumbai League Played?

Wankhede Stadium has been the central venue for the competition since its first season.

All matches in the inaugural 2018 edition were played at Wankhede. The 2019 season also used Wankhede Stadium for all its matches.

The 2025 edition also used DY Patil Stadium alongside Wankhede Stadium, while the 2026 season returned to Wankhede as the main venue for the men’s and women’s competitions.

T20 Mumbai League Records and Highlights

The league has produced several memorable performances since its launch.

The 2018 final remains one of the closest title matches, with Triumph Knights beating Shivaji Park Lions by only three runs.

The 2019 final was also decided by a relatively small margin, with North Mumbai Panthers beating SoBo SuperSonics by 12 runs.

In 2025, Chinmay Sutar’s 53 in the final helped Maratha Royals chase 158 and win their first title.

The 2026 edition produced an even more explosive individual performance when Suved Parkar scored 110 from 54 balls, including a century from just 46 deliveries.

The 2026 final then saw Maratha Royals defend 154/5 against ARCS Andheri, winning by eight runs and becoming the first two-time champions.
