Suryakumar Yadav Wishes To Make A Test Return: India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has shown a desire to make a return to Test cricket for the Indian Cricket Team and claims that red ball cricket has been the priority for him throughout his career.
SKY, throughout his international career, has been seen as a white-ball specialist. He has made his name on this stage as one of the most lethal batters in the world in the limited-overs formats. He played in and was a major part of the Indian team in the last T20I and ODI World Cup.
But so far, he has not been able to translate success with the white ball into Tests. He did make his debut in the longest format in the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, playing one match in Nagput before being dropped from the format.
The No. 1 ranked T20I batter in the world will play in the Buchi Bau Invitational Tournament. This will be followed by an appearance in the Duleep Trophy. Both of these are red ball tournaments, which will see a majority of national team players, despite what format they play, participate in them.

In a recent interview right before going on a run of first-class matches, Suryakumar commented on how his upbringing in the grounds of Mumbai made him fall in love with red-ball cricket, something he prioritises to this day.
“Red-ball cricket has always been my priority. When I grew up in the Maidans of Mumbai and played a lot of local cricket, I started playing with the red cherry. The love for the longest format began there and has always been there. I’ve taken part in a lot of First Class matches for more than 10 years now, and I still cherish playing this format. There’s no question about it, and that’s why I’m here before the Duleep Trophy,” he said.
The 33-year-old is no stranger to first-class cricket. He has played 82 FC matches since making his debut for Mumbai in 2010. At one point, he was also the captain of the historic Ranji Trophy side. With 14 centuries and 29 half-centuries, Surya was one of the biggest names on the Indian domestic circuit for years before making his India debut.
The upcoming Duleep Trophy will set a standard for players who are looking to make it to the Indian Test team. Doing well in that tournament will most likely book a player a spot in the Test series against Bangladesh in September. In the same interview, Suryakumar Yadav also said how he is looking forward to earning a spot on the Test side, saying,

“There are a lot of people who have worked really hard to earn their place, and even I want to earn that spot again. I made my debut for India in Tests. After that, I got injured as well. There were a lot of people who got an opportunity and have done well too. They deserve that opportunity right now.”
The Indian T20I captain is now in his 30s. But it seems that he has a few years of good cricket in him. But it remains to be seen whether he could take on the workload of playing all three formats for India on a regular basis.
