Barcelona Target 21 Year Old Defender From Almeria: FC Barcelona is looking to sign 21-year-old defender Marc Pubill from Almeria in order to bolster their defence in the dying days of the summer transfer window.
The Blaugrana have had a busy transfer window. While they have made some decent signings, like signings Pau Victor from Girona and star-striker Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig, they have had to let go of the likes of Sergi Roberto and Ilkay Gundogan, the latter of which was arguably the team’s best player of the last season.

Having signed only two attackers so far, Barca needs to shore up their defences, which has made them go after Pubill. The Spanish right-back made his professional debut for La Liga side Levante before signing for Almeria in 2023-24. Last season, he played 23 games for his side, scoring a goal and assisting three as Almeria finished 19th and was demoted to the second division.
His contract with his current team extends to 2029, but he has attracted interest from several clubs, including Barcelona. With mere days remaining in the transfer window, the former La Liga champions need to act quickly if they are to sign the young defender.
Marc Pubill was a part of the Spanish team that won the gold medal at the 2023 Paris Olympics. He made it to the team because the Olympic football tournament is U-23. Despite that, he is an Olympic Champion.
But it is not that easy for Barca. Having to let go of Gundogan for free had a reason behind it. The club is currently facing financial issues. More specifically, they are struggling with La Liga’s annual salary limit. As teams are allowed to spend only so much money on salary expenses, letting go of players with high weekly wages became a necessity.
They have even had trouble registering Dani Olmos, despite splurging big cash to sign him. The Catalan club has played two league games so far this season, the most recent of them being against the Athletic Club. Olmo was put in the squad for that match as manager Hansi Flick believed that troubles regarding his registration would be solved before the match, but that was not the case as their big signing of the season still hangs in the balance.
So even if Barcelona signs Marc Pubill, and that is still far from being the case, they will also have to register him before the transfer dealing on August 30. So it remains to be seen whether Barca makes any more signings this window.
