Suryakumar Yadav Refers To Anger Issues: Ahead of his T20I captaincy debut in a full-time capacity, Suryakumar Yadav poignantly touched on how different a character he is, temperament-wise, compared to his turbulent captaincy stint with the Mumbai domestic side in the 2014/15 season.
On Saturday, in Pallekele, Suryakumar will lead India into a new era, having taken over the T20I captaincy baton from Rohit Sharma and with new head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Suryakumar Yadav’s first tryst with captaincy at a higher level ended on a disastrous note in 2014/15 when he was sacked from the position after his teammates complained of anger issues and outbursts in the dressing room to the Mumbai Cricket Association.
A decade on, he is set to lead his country in a full-time capacity, and now gets glorious recommendations from his teammates and coaches about his temperament. He has so far led India in 7 T20Is, winning 5 of them, when Rohit was rested; Suryakumar has also led the Mumbai Indians in one IPL game.
In 10 years, a lot of things change: Suryakumar Yadav Refers To Anger Issues
On the eve of the match, the 33-year-old reflected on the changes he’s undergone as a person, in particular referring to his anger and temperament issues a decade ago.
He said, “In 10 years, a lot of things change, you become a different person altogether, you get to learn a lot of things. I’m also a completely changed man now. Things are completely different, (over the years) you get to learn a lot of things from different captains.”
Gambhir has also captained Suryakumar Yadav at KKR for three seasons from 2014 to 2017 and was crucial in his rise when he was finding his feet in the IPL.
“Our bond is special, we have spoken about the upcoming three T20s, not in great detail but we know each other fairly well, we can read each other’s body language. There are some things he understands even if I don’t say them in words. There’s a special bond between a captain and coach. I’m very excited for this journey,” Suryakumar said of his relationship with Gambhir.
