For a rare instance, Gautam Gambhir showed his emotional side as he was touched profoundly by a voice message from former India head coach Rahul Dravid, whose position Gambhir is filling now.
Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir will kick start his India coaching stint on Saturday with a T20I series against Sri Lanka, which will be followed by an ODI series.
On the morning of the first T20I in Pallekele, the BCCI shared a video in which Gambhir was given a voice message from Dravid, who ended his coaching tenure with the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy last month.
Gambhir is a two-time IPL winning captain with KKR. He then mentored LSG to two playoff finishes, and this year he mentored KKR to their third IPL title.

In his message to Gambhir, Dravid said, “I know how dedicated and passionate you are about Indian cricket, and I’m sure you will bring all these qualities into this new job. For the fans who are very demanding but will always be behind the team, from one Indian cricket coach to another, one last thing in the most heated of times exhale, take a step back, and even if it’s difficult for you, crack a smile. Whatever else happens, that will shock people.”
Upon hearing this message from Dravid, Gambhir got emotional, something he admitted he seldom does. The 42-year-old India head coach said he understands that he has huge shoes to fill of Dravid’s in his new role.
“I feel I think I don’t get too emotional normally. But I think this message actually made me a lot emotional, which normally I assume, but it’s a great message. Hopefully, I can. It’s massive shoes to fill. Hopefully, I can do it with aptitude, honesty, transparency and, hopefully, I can make the entire nation proud,” Gambhir said.
