India comfortably defeated their neighbours to the north in the 1st T20I in the series, played in Mohalo’s PCA Stadium on January 11. After restricting Afghanistan to 158 on a decent batting track, the hosts chased that target down with 15 balls to spare. Returning to the national team setup, Shivam Dube was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 60 while chain and a wicket while bowling.
India will now take on the Afghans in the 2nd T20I on January 14, at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. As per the Suresh Raina Recommends Changes In Playing 11s, India will also see Virat Kohli return to the squad after missing the first game for personal reasons.

During a post-match discussion on match broadcaster JioCinema, Suresh Raina was questioned whether Kuldeep Yadav could get a place in the playing XI for the second match. While he did not mention Kuldeep, who had a great 2023, Raina did recommend some changes in the squad.
“Virat Kohli will play in the second game. Avesh Khan should replace Washington Sundar as it is a small ground,”
said Suresh Raina.
He then went on to comment on why adding an extra pacer in the squad is necessary despite Shivam Dube bowling medium-pace in the first over, saying suggesting that Dube might not be able a proper fifth bowling option.

“It is important to play an additional pacer because it will be challenging for Dube to bowl quota of 4 overs.”
It must be noted that Holkar Stadium is one of the smallest international cricket stadiums in India, with its square boundaries being under 60 m. Playing an off-spinner like Washington Sundar, who at best is a fifth bowling option on any side, might cost India in a stadium known for teams putting up massive totals.
