Profile
Shubman Gill is a highly talented young cricketer from India who has made a name for himself in the world of batting. He gained recognition after scoring an impressive 418 runs with an average of 104.50 in the 2018 ICC U19 World Cup.
Shubman Gill played a crucial role as Prithvi Shaw’s deputy and batted at No. 3, contributing to India’s victory and earning them their fourth world title. He was also honored as the Player of the Tournament in that edition. Shubman Gill’s exceptional performance caught the attention of teams in the 2018 IPL auctions, and he was selected by the Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 1.8 crore (USD 280,000).
Shubman Gill, hailing from Fazilka, Punjab, displayed his exceptional talents at a young age. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, recognized his potential and made the decision to move to Mohali, renting a place near the PCA Stadium to provide his son with better opportunities in cricket. It didn’t take long for Gill to make waves in the cricketing world.
In 2014, he scored an impressive 351 runs in Punjab’s Inter-District U16 tournament, forming a remarkable opening partnership of 587 runs with Nirmal Singh. Shubman Gill continued to shine, achieving a double century in his U16 debut for Punjab at the 2016 Vijay Merchant Trophy.
In the 2016-17 Vijay Hazare Trophy, Shubman Gill made his List A debut for Punjab, taking the position of number three batsman. He then made his first-class debut in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy against Bengal, where he showcased his skills as an opener by scoring his first half-century. Shubman Gill continued to impress in the following game, achieving his maiden century against Services.
Shubman Gill’s exceptional cricketing skills were recognized by the BCCI, as he won the prestigious Best Junior Cricketer award for two consecutive years, 2013-14 and 2014-15. His consistent performances caught the attention of the U19 team selectors.
Once selected, Shubman Gill made a significant impact in India’s Youth ODIs against England, contributing to their impressive 3-1 victory by scoring 351 runs in just 4 innings. He continued to showcase his talent during his first tour of England, where India dominated the hosts with a 5-0 whitewash. Gill once again emerged as the top scorer, accumulating 278 runs across 4 innings, maintaining his high standards of performance.
Shubman Gill’s exceptional batting skills stood out among his fellow teammates at the World Cup, surpassing even Prithvi Shaw, the highly acclaimed 18-year-old Mumbai batsman with an impressive record of five first-class hundreds.
Gill’s technique, which featured a bottom-handed grip, similar to the successful style of Virat Kohli and other renowned players, allowed him to excel in a similar fashion. He displayed a remarkable ability to score runs swiftly, combining quick singles and doubles with powerful shots all around the field. Not only did Gill impress with his batting prowess, but he also showcased his exceptional fielding skills, making him a standout player in both aspects of the game.
After his return from the World Cup in New Zealand, Shubman Gill quickly resumed his cricketing journey by representing Punjab in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Initially, he had some modest scores of 25, 4, and 8. However, Gill quickly bounced back and showcased his brilliance by smashing a remarkable 123 runs against a strong Karnataka team, leading his side to a victorious outcome.
Shubman Gill’s impressive performances during the 2018-19 domestic season showcased his seamless transition into becoming a senior player for the Indian cricket team. Even in the high-pressure environment of the IPL, Gill displayed composure and confidence, despite batting in a position that was not his usual role for the Kolkata Knight Riders.
The year 2019 proved to be a significant turning point in Gill’s career, as he was selected for the ODIs in New Zealand, marking his international debut. This year has opened up new opportunities and possibilities for the talented youngster from Punjab.
Amidst India’s ongoing struggle to find a reliable number-four batsman, there were high hopes that Shubman Gill would be given a chance, especially with the World Cup approaching. However, despite playing a few challenging matches, he found himself out of the squad. Both the selectors and Gill himself understood that he had time on his side and that his opportunity would come eventually.
In the 2019 IPL, Shubman Gill showcased his skills as a top-order batsman and made a significant impact as expected. However, it is his performances in red-ball cricket that have truly convinced people of his abilities as a complete batsman. Gill has consistently scored runs in his short First-class career, which has now earned him recognition and a place as a backup opener for the home Tests against South Africa.
While it is still the beginning of his journey, Shubman Gill’s combination of passion, dedication, and exceptional talent holds great promise for a successful career in Indian cricket. His commitment and hard work are likely to contribute significantly to the sport in the future. As we eagerly await his progress, both Gill and cricket enthusiasts are filled with anticipation and excitement for what lies ahead.
