Sehwag Says Virat Kohli Should Not Open for India: Virat Kohli has been in thunderous form in the IPL 2024. Though the star had to face a lot of criticism on his run rates, the orange cap holder has been the most consistent batter this season, despite a lot of young guns showcasing their firepower.
This led to a conversation about his playing position in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 XI. Some believe that Virat should open for India along with captain Rohit Sharma, a role he is currently doing at RCB successfully. But others think that Kohli should continue batting in his usual spot in international cricket. Former cricketer Virender Sehwag definitely thinks the latter way.
Sehwag Says Virat Kohli Should Not Open for India
According to Sehwag, Virat could bring much more value to the team as a Number 3. For him, Rohit Sharma and Yashaswi Jaiswal are the better combination to open India’s innings at the T20 World Cup.
“If I were in the team, I would not have Kohli open the batting. Instead, he would be sent at number 3, with Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal opening. Managing the middle overs would be his responsibility; he is aware that if there is an early wicket, he can steady the innings during the powerplay. However, if a wicket falls late, the captain and coach must instruct him to maintain momentum. A player has to fulfil these responsibilities,” he said.

Sehwag also points to Sachin Tendulkar as an example to back his statement, referring to the 2007 World Cup.
“Though Sachin Tendulkar preferred opening, he moved down the order to bat at number four in the 2007 World Cup. He had to do it for the team and carry the momentum set by the openers. Even the best players must be flexible; if your team already has two capable openers, being asked to bat at three is a role you have to embrace. Virat Kohli understands what’s best for the team,” he added.
