Mumbai domestic team batsman Sarfaraz Khan had been trending ahead of the IPL 2026 as pictures of his improved fitness had surfaced on social media.
Criticized earlier in his career for his big frame and lack of fitness, Sarfaraz has now drastically changed his body structure through extensive work in the gym and serious control of his diet.
All of that paid dividends as he put in an athletic dive to dismiss Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the CSK vs RR encounter on Monday evening.
At the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Sarfaraz made his debut for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), though it ended up on a somber note as RR mauled CSK in a one-sided contest in Guwahati to kick off their campaign in style, with the five-time champions left with more questions to answer.
Chasing an undaunting target of 128 runs, RR raced off the blocks through Sooryavanshi’s blitzkrieg as the 125-year-old left-hander blasted a half-century in only 15 balls, the second-fastest fifty by an RR batsman in IPL history.
Sooryavanshi’s exploits rocketed RR to 74/0 in the powerplay and effectively sealed the match. The youngster, however, was dismissed on the second ball after the powerplay off the bowling of medium pacer Anshul Kamboj and courtesy of a terrific diving catch by Sarfaraz.

Sooryavanshi threw his hands at a length delivery, pitched outside the off-stump and angling across him, from Kamboj, looking to carve a boundary on the offside.
However, this time the southpaw didn’t get enough power and elevation on the stroke, and it went straight in the direction of Sarfaraz at deep cover.
The ball was dying on the fielder, so he had to put in a dive, stretching his muscles and torso in order to reach the ball before it hit the ground. Sarfaraz tumbled on the ground but didn’t lose the ball from his tight grip and completed a sensational catch.

Earlier, Riyan Parag, the new RR skipper, had won the toss and elected to bowl first. His bowlers vindicated his decision and rocked CSK in the powerplay, taking four wickets in the first six overs.
The new opening pair of Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad faltered tonight, with both batsmen scoring only six runs each as Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger produced spells from hell with the new ball.
CSK were bowled out for 127 runs. Archer, Burger, and former CSK captain Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each, while only one CSK batter, Jamie Overton, managed to score more than 20 runs.
