SA vs BAN Match Highlights And Report-T20 WC: Just a day after India defended 119 by six runs against Pakistan, at the same venue, the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, South Africa defended 113 by four runs against Bangladesh. The Proteas, with their third win of the group stage, sealed their place in the Super 8 round of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Once again the pitch in New York had plenty for the pacers and both teams’ pacers used the juice in the surface. The ball also held a bit on the pitch, making shot-making difficult once again.
At one stage, Bangladesh required 27 runs off 24 balls with six wickets in hand. However, Ottneil Baartman and Kagiso Rabada bowled brilliantly to give Keshav Maharaj 11 runs to defend in the last over. Maharaj took two wickets in the last over, including that off Mahmudullah, which was superbly and calmly caught by Markram at long-on very close to the boundary when six runs were needed off two balls.

South Africa elected to bat first and suffered another top-order collapse, slipping to 23/4 in the 5th over. Tanzim Hasan Sakib got on a roll: he got Hendricks lbw in his first over, Quinton de Kock bowled in his second, and Tristan Stubbs caught at cover in this third, while Taskin Ahmed struck with Markram’s scalp.
Klaasen and Miller started the rebuild slowly, knowing that even a score of 120 is defendable here. The duo went after the fence only when it was in their arc. Klaasen smoked spinner Rishad Hossain for two consecutive sixes in the 10th over while Miller hit Mustafizur for a big hit. After bashing Mahmudullah for a maximum, Klaasen was gone for 46, dismissed by Taskin before Miller was bowled for 29 runs by Hossain. South Africa finished with 113/6.

In the chase, Tanzid Hasan creamed Rabada for a couple of fours but the senior pace had the last laugh as Hasan edged to de Kock. A partnership of 20 (25) for the second wicket was formed between Liton Das and Shanto, which was broken by Maharaj.
The Asian side then suffered a mini-collapse, going from 35/1 to 50/4, with Nortje bouncing out Shakib and Shanto. Bangladesh got steady in the chase through a partnership of 44 (45) between Mahmudullah and Towhid Hridoy.
South African bowlers kept it tight in the middle overs and didn’t allow Mahmudullah and Hridoy to go further in the chase. Hridoy scored 37 (34) and Mahmudullah scored 20 (27). The partnership was broken by Rabada in the 18th over with Hridoy’s wicket. And even though Mahmudullah stayed till the end, he couldn’t close the game for Bangladesh.
Score summary: South Africa 113/6 in 20 overs (Heinrich Klaasen 46, Tanzim Hasan Sakib 3/18); Bangladesh 109/7 in 20 overs (Towhid Hridoy 37, Keshav Maharaj 3/27). South Africa defeated Bangladesh by 4 runs.
