The Rajasthan Royals remain firm in the top two on the points table with a victory over the Punjab Kings in IPL 2026. But why did PBKS lose to RR?
Today’s PBKS Vs RR game was Match 40 of IPL 2026. It was played at the New PCA Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh, with the away team winning the toss and deciding to bat first. Punjab Kings got off to a decent start before the RR bowlers rallied in the middle-overs. But with a strong finish, PBKS reached the score of 222/4 runs in 20 overs.
In response, the Rajasthan Royals got off to a flying start, stayed around the required run rate throughout, and finished quite strongly to win this game by six wickets.

1) Run Rate Controlled In The Middle Overs
The Punjab Kings got off to a quick start in this game. While Jofra Archer bowled magnificently, a combination of luck and poor field placement meant that after just three overs, the score at the end of the powerplay was 65/1. Priyansh Arya had made 29 off 11 before losing his wicket.
The only economical over in the powerplay was bowled by Brijesh Sharma, who looked good today, apart from his last over.
The load of scoring quickly after Priyansh’s wicket was taken up by Cooper Connolly. After eight overs, the score was 95/1, and PBKS looked to line up a massive score.
However, the ninth over was about to change the rhythm of this innings. 19-year-old leggie Yash Raj Punjab dismissed Connolly on the second ball for 30 off 14 and conceded just six runs in the over.
In the five overs from the ninth to the 13th, Punjab managed to make only 39 runs, a sharp drop-off in their scoring rate, which was well over 10 before this point. While Prachsimran Singh did score a 50 in this period, reaching this milestone in 35 balls, the RR bowling had pulled the game back.
This was displayed in the 14th over, where Punja got the crucial wicket of Prabhsimran, dismissing the in-form opener for 59 off 44 after he was suffocated off runs.
The Royals’ spin duo did really well today. Yash Punja did concede 41 runs in his four overs, but also took two massive wickets. On the other hand, Ravindra Jadeja, despite not getting anyone out, conceded just 32 runs.
Brijesh Sharma was excellent today, for the most part. In his first three overs, he had given away just 18 runs. It was just his final over, which was also the last over of the innings, where he gave away 24.
However, despite doing well to ensure that the run rate would not be too far from the 10 rpo mark, the 41 runs made in the last two overs took the Punjab Kings’ score to an above-par total of 222/4. Mostly thanks to a fiery 62 off 22 by Marcus Stoinis.
2) RR Gets Off To A Flying Start
The Rajasthan Royals’ opening duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been on song this season. Jaiswal, while being a bit understated, has an average of above 403 and a strike rate of almost 160 this season. On the other hand, 15-year-old Sooryavanshi is a frontrunner in the Orange Cap race for IPL 2026.
The two of them ensured that RR got off the mark quickly. Vaibhav hit two boundaries and a six in the first over, then hit a four and two maximums in the second. After just three overs, the score had raced up to 44 runs.
The fourth over by Arshdeep Singh saw Vaibhav Sooryavanshi fall after making 43 off 16, but still went for 22 runs as Jaiswal went from playing a supporting role to scoring fast.
At the end of the powerplay, the Royals were cruising at 84/1. It was only the introduction of spin into the attack that brought the run rate down. And while Dhruv Jurel did not do well with the bat tonight, making 16 off 20 and struggling against some quality spin, Jaiswal would go on to make 51 off 27, giving his side a base to build the chase around.
By the time Yashasvi was out, RR was around the required run rate. However, the Kings would have been seeing themselves as the favourites at this point, seeing how their opponent’s middle order had not fired yet this season. But that was about to change tonight.
3) The RR Middle Order Finally Delivers
The Rajasthan Royals had made a couple of changes to their side from the previous game. The first one to bring in Yash Raj Punja in place of Tushar Deshpande/Ravi Bishnoi had been a successful one. The second one was bringing in Dasun Shanaka in place of Shimron Hetmyer, who had been struggling with form this season.
While Shanaka did not get to bat today, Hetmyer’s removal from the playing XI meant Donovan Ferreira was pushed up to No. 5, a move that won RR the match.
But the middle order starts with the No. 4 batter, who was captain Riyan Parag. He looked quite confident with the bat today, as he navigated the PBKS spin duo of Harpreet Brar and Yuzvendra Chahal better than any of the Royals batters. However, he was inexplicably dismissed by Chahal in the 14th over for 29 off 16 as the skipper played an ill-advised slog and was caught at mid-wicket instead.
This left the pair of Donovan Ferreira and impact player Shubham Dubey on the crease. While the two had shown glimpses of their talent in the IPL before, with Ferreira even scoring a half-century earlier last season, tonight, they had to win the match for their team in a situation where the Royals needed 72 runs in 30 deliveries to win.
While the South African took some time to take note of the situation, Dubey displayed from ball one why his talents are valued highly by RR. Not only does he show some fine power hitting, but also the deft touch a finisher needs in T20 cricket.
14 runs came in the 15th over, while 15 came in the 16th. And just like that, the equation had come down to 43 required off the last four overs.
A solid eight-run 17th over by Lockie Ferguson left 34 to make in three. But the next two overs, which went for 17 and 16 runs respectively, essentially finished the game, leaving just two to win in the final over, which only required two balls.
Donovan Ferreira, with one run required off five deliveries, finished the game with a six, also reaching his half-century with the maximum. He made 52 off 26 tonight. Meanwhile, Shubham Dubey made 31 off 12 and played a vital role in winning this game for Rajasthan.
RR ended up winning this game by six wickets with four balls remaining. For his match-winning half-century, Donovan Ferreira was named the Player of the Match.
With this win, the Rajasthan Royals climb to second on the points table with six wins, three losses, 12 points, and a positive net run rate in nine games.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Kings, after losing their first game this season, remain at the top of the points table. In the eight games they have played, they have won six, lost one, and another was washed off due to rain. They have 13 points and a brilliant net run rate.
