Nuno Mendes is a Portuguese left-back. He plays for Paris Saint-Germain and the Portugal national team. He was born on June 19, 2002.

He came through Sporting CP’s youth academy and made his first-team debut in 2020. In his first full season, he won the Primeira Liga and the Taça da Liga. He was named in the Primeira Liga Team of the Year. In August 2021, he moved to PSG on loan and signed permanently in June 2022 for €38 million.

He has won five Ligue 1 titles and back-to-back Champions League titles in 2025 and 2026. The 2024-25 season was a continental treble, winning the league, cup, and Champions League all in one season.

Nuno Mendes has represented Portugal at various youth levels. He made his senior debut in 2021 and has been selected for two World Cups and two European Championships. He won the UEFA Nations League in 2025 and was named the best player of the finals.

Top 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Nuno Mendes

He Mistook a Sporting Scout for a Mugger

At just 10 years old, Nuno Mendes noticed a man following him home from school. Thinking he was about to get mugged, he panicked, sprinted home, and grabbed a kitchen knife to defend himself. The man turned out to be a Sporting CP scout. Thankfully, the misunderstanding was cleared up, and Mendes joined Sporting’s academy.

Discovered by His School Teacher

Mendes wasn’t spotted by a fancy scout with a clipboard, he was discovered by his school teacher, Bruno Botelho. Botelho saw raw talent in the young Nuno and invited him to train with local club Despertar on the outskirts of Lisbon. That single invitation changed the trajectory of his life forever.

Started Football Late and as an Attacking Midfielder

Unlike prodigies who kick a ball from age three, Mendes didn’t start organized football until he was nine. When he did start, he wasn’t a left-back, he played as an attacking midfielder. Sporting’s renowned academy later reshaped him into the full-back we know today. A late bloomer with a position change.

Studied Marcelo and Alaba, Not Just Ronaldo

Like any young dreamer, Mendes idolized Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. But the players he truly tried to emulate were David Alaba and Marcelo. He studied Marcelo’s flair and attacking movement, and Alaba’s versatility and adaptability, trying to blend their qualities into his own game. A student of the best full-backs.

Small and Unremarkable as a Youth Player

Mendes wasn’t a standout star in Sporting’s youth ranks. His under-11 coach recalls that Mendes was small for his age and not among the most talented. What set him apart was his tireless work rate, covering the entire left flank. At 17, few would have predicted his meteoric rise to come.

A Broken Leg Changed Everything

At the under-17 level, Mendes suffered a serious leg break against Loures. That injury became a turning point. As his former teammate put it: “That’s when he realized what he wanted to become.” During recovery, he underwent a physical overhaul, hitting the gym and transforming his body. He returned stronger and more determined than ever.

He Lost His Father in 2020

Mendes’s father, who was of Angolan descent, sadly passed away in 2020. The tragedy came just as Mendes was breaking into Sporting’s first team. His father had been a huge supporter of his career, and Mendes has spoken about how the loss motivated him to work even harder and sign his first professional contract. A driving force from grief.

Has Angolan Heritage, Not Cape Verdean

There’s been confusion about Mendes’s background, with some incorrectly stating he is of Cape Verdean descent. In fact, both of his parents are from Angola. He was born in Sintra, Portugal, but his bloodline runs deep in Angola, adding a touch of African flair to his identity and playing style. Roots that run deep.

Part of PSG’s Blockbuster 2021 Summer Class

When Mendes joined PSG in summer 2021, he arrived alongside a galaxy of superstars: Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, Achraf Hakimi, and Gianluigi Donnarumma. At just 19, he was surrounded by some of the biggest names in football history. He impressed enough in his loan year that PSG made the move permanent for around €38 million.

Scored a Free-Kick When Everyone Expected Ronaldo

During the 2026 World Cup against Uzbekistan, Portugal won a free-kick in a dangerous position. Everyone, including the entire Uzbekistan wall, expected Cristiano Ronaldo to take it. Instead, Mendes stepped up and curled the ball directly into the net, scoring his first-ever World Cup goal. A moment of confidence on the biggest stage.
