Nations League Affects World Cup Qualification: The 2024/25 UEFA Nations League is currently underway. And while this competition is not the most prestigious on its own, it will play a big role in the qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The competition, founded in 2018, was conceptualised to give more meaning to the otherwise loathed international breaks in Europe. This league comprises all the teams in the European Football Association (UEFA). All 54 teams, barring banned Russia, are divided into four leagues from A to D and move to the league above or below based on their performances.
For example, the A league is divided into four groups of 16 teams each. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarterfinals, while the last team from each group will be relegated to League B next time around. Meanwhile, the team finishing third will play in the playoffs. The team that wins the playoffs in League A wins the Nations League, while the best-performing teams from the lower league move to the league above.
How Nations League Affects World Cup Qualification
So now that we understand how the UEFA Nations League works, we will now see how it impacts the qualifications of the FIFA World Cup. The 2026 World Cup will be played in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in June and July 2026.
For the first time in World Cup history, 48 teams will be participating in the competition, expanding from the 32 last time around. The expanded number of teams means that each continental association will get extra berths in the tournament. For UEFA, the number of teams increased, from 13 to 16.
The European qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place from March 2025 to March 2026. 12 groups of 4-5 teams each will have six to ten matches against one another. All the group toppers will qualify for the World Cup, while all the runner-ups will go into a qualifying round.
This qualifying round consists of 16 teams. As stated above, 12 of those will be the runner-ups from the groups, while the remaining four will be the top-ranked teams from the UEFA Nations League that have not finished first or second in their qualifying group.
Currently, Spain and Germany have qualified for the Nations League quarterfinals. These will take place in March 2025.
