England are slowly moving away from their golden generation in white-ball cricket as Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow have faced the sack after underwhelming performances in the last two ICC events.
On Monday, the ECB named squads for the white-ball matches against Australia at home. Starting September 11, Jos Buttler’s side will be hosting Australia for three T20Is and five ODIs.
Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow Dropped vs Australia
As the ECB look to move on from their senior players, they have handed maiden white-ball call-ups to Jacob Bethell, Josh Hull, and Dan Mousley. Uncapped John Turner and Jordan Cox are picked to take on Australia.
Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow were part of the squads that won their title in the 2019 World Cup, and Ali was present in the line-up that won the T20 World Cup in 2022.
Then England suffered disappointing exits in the last two ICC events and failed to defend both their titles. England failed to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup 2023 and were knocked out in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024. Both players featured in the last two ICC tournaments and had very little to show.
England have also omitted Liam Livingstone from the ODI squad but retained him in the T20I squad. Further, Chris Jordan, who has been a key cog in England’s T20I sides and was part of the title-winning team in 2022, has been dropped as well.
Fast bowler Mark Wood is out of the summer due to a muscle strain injury he sustained in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Manchester.
Speedster Saqib Mahmood enters the T20I squad after a Man of the Match performance in the final of The Hundred. He’s been dealing with back stress fractures over the last couple of years.
Jofra Archer is named in both squads and is set to return to ODI cricket after more than a year.
Interestingly, Joe Root is not named in the ODI squad; it’s unclear whether he’s rested or dropped.
Former head coach Matthew Mott resigned from his post after returning from the T20 World Cup. Marcus Trescothick is the interim coach for the white-ball matches of the summer.
