Mumbai Indians Predicted 11: There are some serious designation holders in the Mumbai Indians team: 2024 T20 World Cup-winning captain Rohit Sharma; 2026 T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav; arguably the best white-ball pace-bowling all-rounder in the world, Hardik Pandya; and inarguably the best all-format fast bowler (and perhaps in each format too), Jasprit Bumrah.
There are more: New Zealand’s captain who is one of the best spin-bowling all-rounders in limited-overs cricket, Mitchell Santner; and one of the most talented and in-form young T20 batsmen in the country who recently played an important role in India lifting the trophy, Tilak Varma.
All of them make the Mumbai Indians arguably the strongest team on paper in the tournament and formidable title contenders heading into the IPL 2026 season.
MI finished third in the points table last season under Pandya, beat Gujarat in the Eliminator, but lost to Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 courtesy of a blinder from Shreyas Iyer.
MI knew they had a solid unit and didn’t need to make too many changes. They only strengthened their squad by trading in Sherfane Rutherford, Shardul Thakur, and Mayank Markande while trading out Arjun Tendulkar.
They released eight players, none of whom was a first-choice guy. MI walked into the IPL 2026 auction with only INR 2.75 crore and bought Quinton de Kock for INR 1 crore and four uncapped Indians for INR 30 lakh each.
MI vs KKR: When is Mumbai Indians’ (MI) first match of IPL 2026?
Mumbai Indians will begin their IPL 2026 campaign on March 29, Sunday, when they host Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for an evening match at the Wankhede Stadium.
MI is so spoilt for choice in the overseas department that only Trent Boult is a certain starter among foreigners, while as many as six Indian players are first-choice ones.
The seven first-choice players in Mumbai’s XI would be Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir, and Trent Boult. You can even add Deepak Chahar to this list, who is likely to pip Shardul Thakur over for the No. 8 position at the start of the tournament in the MI vs KKR fixture.
The MI team management will hold debates for the three remaining spots. One of them is set to go to either de Kock or Ryan Rickelton. Rickelton is the incumbent, having performed impressively in his debut IPL season last year, but MI acquired de Kock for the sole purpose of rekindling the 2020 MI team energy and valuing his experience.
Next up, Mitchell Santner is one of the most reliable spinners in the world in this format and has been hitting bombs with the bat over the past year.
In most T20 lineups in the world, Santner would be a lock-in. But here, MI have an embarrassment of riches. They might even go with the Afghanistan mystery spinner AM Ghazanfar and feature the power-hitting and in-form Sherfane Rutherford.
Then there is Will Jacks in the wings as well, fresh from bagging four Man of the Match awards at the recent T20 World Cup. South African pace-bowling all-rounder Corbin Bosch was one of the standout performers from his team in the T20 WC but is unlikely to find a place in the MI vs KKR encounter.
Leg-spinner Markande and left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar could switch in the lineup depending on the pitch.
Who will be MI’s Impact Player in IPL 2026?
Over the last couple of seasons, Mumbai Indians have mostly assigned the Impact Player role to Rohit Sharma, who swaps in for a bowler, most likely Jasprit Bumrah.
