The Chennai Super Kings rose to fifth on the points table with a victory over the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026. But why did MI lose to CSK?
Today’s MI vs CSK game was Match 33 of IPL 2026. It was played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, with the home team winning the toss and deciding to bowl first. While Mumbai kept taking wickets at regular intervals, their bowlers had no answer for Sanju Samson, who would go on to score his second century this season and take the Super Kings’ score to 207/6 in 20 overs.
In response, the Indians were thwarted by the CSK bowling attack, especially the spinners. Apart from two scores in the 30s, no other batter even made double-digit runs. And so, Mumbai were dismissed for 104 runs in 19 overs and lost the game by 103 runs.
Here, we will discuss the three reasons why Chennai Super Kings beat Mumbai Indians in this MI vs CSK game of IPL 2026.
Why Chennai Super Kings Beat Mumbai Indians
1) Sanju Samson Unleashed
Wicketkeeper/batter Sanju Samson was CSK’s biggest acquisition ahead of the season. The franchise parted with two valuable all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, to acquire him. But the Kerala-native did not get off to the start expected of him, especially after being named the Player of the Tournament in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Sanju had back-to-back-to-back flops in Chennai’s first three games of the season. But then, he came back with vengeance in the fourth, scoring his first century in the CSK yellow against the Delhi Capitals.
Tonight, he did it again, scoring his second century this season in just his seventh game. He scored 101 runs in 54 deliveries to take his team past the 200-run mark.
It was not a good day for the Super Kings’ batting order. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed for 22 off 14; Sarfaraz Khan made just 14 runs; Shivam Dube got out for five, while Dewald Brevis, despite looking good in his time at the crease, made just 21 runs. Kartik Sharma played a dismal 18-run innings, for which he took 19 deliveries. Jamie Overton slogged at the end, making 15 off seven, while Akeal Hosein played just two balls and scored as many runs.
However, as wickets fell regularly, Sanju Samson stayed firm on one end, kept making runs, and maintained a healthy run rate of over 10 rpo.
Seeing how wickets kept tumbling at the other end, the 31-year-old played sensibly, scoring runs with some exquisite shots. Meanwhile, he would also get runs where he could and punish the opposition’s weaker bowlers with several boundaries in an over.
Sanju Samson reached his half-century in 36 deliveries. It then took him 54 balls to reach 101 runs. He had to hit a four on the final ball of the innings to cross into the three-digit mark.
This innings not only took the Chennai Super Kings to a solid score but also showed why Sanju Samson is one of the highest-rated limited-overs batters in world cricket.
2) No MI Batter Played A Decent Inning
By the time the second innings started, there was a significant turn in the pitch, which meant this chase would be a tough one for MI. Despite that, in a team full of Indian Cricket Team batters, at least one player had to step up and play a fine innings. That, however, did not happen.
Danish Malewar, who made his IPL debut in MI’s last game, had another flop innings today, being caught behind for a golden duck in the first over, bowled by Akeal Hosein. The other opener, Quinton de Kock, departed in the second over after making seven off 10, bowled by Mukesh Choudhary.
The powerplay turned into a nightmare for the Mumbai Indians, as in the third over, Hosein got another batter out for a duck, this time bowling over Naman Dhir. And just like that, in three overs, the Indians’ score was 11/3.
The experienced middle-order duo of Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav went into defensive mode. Seeing through the CSK bowling attack, which was on fire. At the end of the powerplay, the score was 29/3.
The two batted together for about 10 overs, in which time they made 73 runs. Towards the end of the third over, Varma became Akeal’s third wicket, as he was bowled for 37 off 29, with a strike rate under 130.
Yadav had a worse time on the pitch; he was Akeal Hosein’s fourth and final wicket of the night and was dismissed in the 14th over for 36 off 30 and a strike rate of 120.
This stable partnership, despite leaving way too many runs on the board for the lower-middle order, at least kept MI in the game. However, the otherwise explosive pair of Sherfane Rutherford and captain Hardik Pandya were dismal tonight as well.
Hardik came in to bat after Tilak’s wicket, made one run, and was then dismissed by Noor Ahmad. Then, on the very next ball, Ahmad got his second and dismissed Rutherford for a golden duck.
After AKY’s wicket fell in the 14th over, the score was 87/7, and the match was already dead and buried. Krish Bhagat mounted a resistance, batting for 15 balls while making seven runs before his dismissal in the 17th over. Shardul Thakur made six off 12 before he got out. Ashwani Kumar scored just a single run, while Jasprit Bumrah scored two.
In response to a 200+ score in the first innings, the Mumbai Indians crumbled under mounting pressure and disciplined bowling as they were dismissed for 104 runs in just 19 overs.
3) Chennai Spinners Spin A Web
CSK bowled excellently today. And while the pacers did a fine job, the credit for this bowling performance will go to the spinners.
Seeing there was a lot of help for the spinner on the pitch, Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad gave the first over of the innings to lanky tweaker Akeal Hosein. And in just his first over, he dismissed Danish Malewar for a golden duck. Then, in just his second over, he got another duck wicket; this time it was Naman Dhir, who was bowled from an absolute ripper.
So far, Hosein had bowled two overs, conceded just seven runs, and taken two wickets.
Spinners were brought into the attack in the ninth over. This time it was Noor Ahmad with the ball in his hand. He gave away 10 runs in his first over and nine in his second. But his time would come soon.
Akeal came back into the attack in the 12th over and got the crucial wicket of Tilak Varma. Not only that, but Varma was the second batter tonight that the West Indian had bowled.
The 13th over, bowled by Noor, would be his time in the spotlight. On the first ball of the over, he got the wicket of the opposition skipper Hardik Pandya. Then, on the second, he dismissed Sherfane Rutherford after a solid catch from Anshul Kamboj at deep point. In that over.
The Afghan spinner took two wickets in his third over and conceded just two runs. He would end his four-over spell tonight with the figures of 2/24 and an economy of six.
But this was not it for the CSK spinners. Akeal Hosein had one over remaining, in which he would get another wicket, this time dismissing the captain of the Indian cricket team in the T20S, Suryakumar Yadav. His figures after a four-over spell were 4/17. If not for a ton by Sanju Samson, he would be named the Player of the Match.
That’s not to say that the Chennai pacer did not do well in this game. Mukesh Choudhary took the wicket of Quinton de Kock in the powerplay and conceded just 31 runs in four overs. Anshul Kamboj gave away just 10 runs in three overs and took the wicket of Shardul Thakur. He was also superb in the field.
Jamie Overton and Gurjapneet Singh bowled two overs each, conceded 14 and seven runs, respectively, and took one wicket each.
The Super Kings won this MI vs CSK game by 103 runs, a massive win for the five-time champions. And for his brilliant knock tonight, Sanju Samson was named the Player of the Match.
With this win, the Chennai Super Kings shot up to fifth on the points table with three wins, four losses, six points, and a positive net run rate in seven games.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians stay at eighth on the points table. In the seven games they have played, they have lost five and have won just two, netting them four points and a poor net run rate.
