Jonny Bairstow is a wicketkeeper-batter who represents England in every format. He plays for Welsh Fire in The Hundred and Yorkshire in domestic cricket. He played for the England team, which won the Cricket World Cup in 2019.

He began playing T20 cricket for Yorkshire in 2010. After becoming an England regular, he played in many T20 leagues. He featured for Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings in the IPL, and Welsh Fire in The Hundred. 

In 2022, Bairstow won the Professional Cricketers’ Association Men’s Cricketer of the Year award and the Cricket Writers’ Club Bob Willis Trophy. He was also named in the ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year and became the first winner of the Wisden Trophy in 2023.

Jonny Bairstow Records and Achievements

Jonny Bairstow scored 1108 County Championship runs in 2015 at an average of 92.33, including a massive 366-run partnership with Tim Bresnan. He made his first Test century in 2016, scoring 150 in Cape Town, followed by another Test century of 140 against Sri Lanka at home. He has scored multiple ODI centuries, including two against the West Indies.

In 2022, he scored 1061 Test runs at a strike rate of 76, including four centuries and a seventy in five innings during an aggressive attacking era of English cricket. He also scored important World Cup group-stage hundreds against New Zealand and India.

He scored multiple Ashes centuries across different series and produced a notable unbeaten 99 in the 2023 Ashes Test at Old Trafford. He has also played in the IPL and become one of England’s leading modern white-ball batters.

In Test cricket, Jonny Bairstow has played 100 matches and scored 6042 runs, including 12 centuries and 26 half-centuries. In ODI cricket, he has played 107 matches and scored 3868 runs with 11 centuries and 17 fifties. In T20 Internationals, Bairstow has played 80 matches and scored 1671 runs with 10 fifties. In first-class cricket, he has 232 matches and 14829 runs with 31 centuries and 77 fifties.

Jonny Bairstow’s Personal Life

Jonny Bairstow has spoken openly about his father’s death and how it shaped his life and career. His father, David Bairstow (nicknamed Bluey), died by suicide when Jonny was around eight years old. Since then, he has carried the emotional weight of that loss while building his cricket career.

Jonny became very close to his mother, Janet, and sister, Becky. He once said he felt responsible for helping support his family and even tried to step into a father-like role at home. He is very protective of his mother, who worked as an administrator with the Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

The grief affected him in different stages of his life. He kept many emotions private early in his career but later spoke more openly, especially through his book A Clear Blue Sky, where he described memories of his father and his journey toward acceptance and forgiveness. He has said cricket helped him stay focused, but the memories of his father have always stayed close to him.

Jonny Bairstow Contract

Jonny Bairstow, who is captain of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, has extended his contract with the club until the end of 2028.

Bairstow is 36 years old and has played 100 Test matches for England. He became Yorkshire’s captain for the 2025 season and helped them stay in Division One of the County Championship. Yorkshire finished seventh in the Championship in 2025. Speaking to the club, he said leading the team was a real honor and that he looks forward to returning in 2026.
