There are early talks about taking the IPL 2027 outside India again, this time to Australia. The idea is to host a regular-season match at the Adelaide Oval in March.
This plan has been discussed by officials from South Australia cricket and tourism, but the key point is that the Board of Control for Cricket in India has not yet been officially approached or approved anything. So right now, it’s only a proposal.
One interesting part of the plan is a possible exchange with the Big Bash League. The idea is that if an IPL game happens in Adelaide, a BBL match could be played in Chennai in return.
The reason behind this push is simple. Australia has a large Indian fan base, and an IPL game there would likely sell out quickly and boost tourism. Adelaide has already used big events in other sports to bring in crowds, so this fits that approach.
If it happens, it won’t be the first time IPL goes overseas. The league has already been played in South Africa (2009) and the United Arab Emirates multiple times due to elections and COVID. The final decision depends completely on the BCCI.
Why Adelaide Oval is a Top Choice for IPL 2027?
Adelaide Oval has a long and important history in cricket. In domestic cricket, it is home to South Australia cricket team (Southern Redbacks) and Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League.
The first international match at the Adelaide Oval was played in 1874, when a team led by W. G. Grace beat South Australia. Just a few years later, in 1884, the ground hosted its first Test match, with England defeating Australia.
It now hosts annual matches like the Australia Day ODI and also an Ashes Test every few years. In 2015, it made history by hosting the first-ever day-night Test match between Australia and New Zealand. Later, in 2017, it also hosted the first day-night Ashes Test.
Some major moments happened here. In 1931, Don Bradman scored 299 not out, which stood as the highest Test score at the ground for many years. That record was broken in 2019 when David Warner scored 335 against Pakistan. The ground also saw the famous Bodyline series in 1932–33, where tensions were very high between England and Australia.
There have been close and dramatic matches too. In 1992, West Indies beat Australia by just one run, the narrowest win in Test history. In 2020, India were bowled out for 36, their lowest Test score ever and the lowest at this venue.
Adelaide Oval has also been part of limited-overs cricket. The first ODI here was played in 1975, and the first T20 International came in 2011, where England beat Australia. The ground was also used during the 2022 T20 World Cup and hosted a semi-final.
When was IPL Played Outside India?
The IPL is usually played in India, but a few seasons had to move abroad. This mostly happened due to elections or COVID-19.
In 2009, the entire tournament was shifted to South Africa because of general elections in India. Security was the main issue. The move worked well as fans there supported the league strongly. Deccan Chargers won the title by beating Royal Challengers Bangalore.
In 2014, elections again caused changes. This time, only the first part of the season was held in the UAE, with 20 matches played there. After that, the tournament returned to India. Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Punjab Kings in the final. In 2020, COVID-19 made it impossible to host the tournament in India. The full season was played in the UAE under strict safety rules. Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals to win the trophy.
In 2021, the season started in India but had to stop midway because of rising COVID cases in teams. The remaining matches were later played in the UAE. Chennai Super Kings won the title after defeating Kolkata Knight Riders. For 2024, there was also talk of moving the second half outside India due to elections, with the UAE as an option, but it depended on scheduling decisions.
