The Sunrisers Hyderabad rose to third on the points table with a victory over the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026. But why did DC lose to SRH?

Today’s game was Match 31 of IPL 2026. It was played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad, with the away team winning the toss and deciding to bowl first. This immediately proved to be the wrong decision. Abhishek Sarma dominated and scored a century. The other batters played quickfire innings and took the SRH total to 242/2 in 20 overs.

In response, the Capitals had a decent first half, but their innings disintegrated in the second. None of their batters batted at a strike rate of over 200 or made a bulk load of runs. As a result, they were stopped at 195/9, losing the game by 47 runs.

Here, we will discuss the three reasons why Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Delhi Capitals in this game of IPL 2026.

Why Sunrisers Hyderabad Beat Delhi Capitals

1) Abhishek Sharma Pops Off

Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma’s innings will be the headline of today’s game. While everyone knows what the 25-year-old is capable of, he has not been the most consistent this season. Well, tonight was his time in the spotlight.

Sharma opened the innings alongside Travis Head. The two started steadily, making 36 runs in the first four overs. The winds shifted in the fifth over, bowled by Nitish Rana, and that over went for 20 runs. Abhishek hit two sixes in that over while Head hit one.

At the end of the powerplay, the Sunrisers’ score was 67/1. The next couple of overs were a little quiet before, in the ninth, Abhishek reached his half-century in 25 deliveries. Later in that over, bowled by opposition captain Axar Patel, Travis Head got out for 37 off 26.

This allowed Sharma to go berserk. In the 11th over, bowled by Kuldeep Yadav, 22 runs were scored. Both Abhishek Sharma and the incoming Ishank Kishan, SRH’s captain in this game, were scoring boundaries left, right, and center. By the end of the 14th over, the score had reached 160/1.

At the end of the 15th over, Kishan was run out, bringing Heinrich Klaasen to the crease, who too would play a quickfire innings.

On the other hand, Abhishek reached the three-digit mark for the second time in the IPL, scoring this 100 in just 47 balls.

Sharma would remain unbeaten by the end of Hyderabad’s 20-over run. He ended up making 135 runs in 68 balls. Klaasen too played a crucial inning, making 37 off 13. The two managed to take their team to a massive score of 242/2 in regulation overs.

2) No DC Batter Went Big

To chase a target with a required run rate of over 12 right from the get-go, one or two of a team’s batters need to score big runs. Not only that, but the rest of the batting order needs to chip in with quick runs. Suffice it to say that did not happen tonight for the Delhi Capitals.

The in-form opening duo of Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul opened the innings for the Capitals. In the third over, Nissanka would depart for eight off six, with the score being 21/1.

What followed was DC’s biggest partnership of the night. Rahul and the incoming Nitish Rana batted together for a little under eight overs, made 86 runs together, and took the team total past the 100-run mark before the end of the 10th over.

In the 10th over, Rahul, who played somewhat of a supporting role in this partnership, would be dismissed by Sakib Hussain for 32 off 23. Rana, after making a half-century, would get out in the very next over for 57 off 30 by Eshan Malinga.

David Mileer would get bowled on the very next ball for a golden duck. And just like that, the score went from 107/1 to 107/4, and Delhi was in deep trouble, needing the middle order to save the game.

That saving would not come. While Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs showed their worth to some degree, making 41 off 28 and 27 off 16, respectively, their innings would not be enough today.

Ashutosh Sharma was dismissed for 14 off 10, skipper Axar Patel made 2 off 3, and the tail would contribute no runs as the Capitals were stopped for 195/9 in 20 overs.

The issue was not only that the highest individual score in this game for the Delhi Capitals while chasing 243 was 57 runs; it was also the fact that none of the batters, even those who played cameo innings, had a strike rate of over 200. Rana would lead in this department too; his 57 off 30 came at a strike rate of 190, while no other batter even had one of over 170.

3) Malinga Magic Revived

For years, the fans of the Indian Premier League saw Lasith Malinga dominate the league with his pace, accuracy, and slinky action. While the Sri Lankan has been retired for a few seasons, Malinga magic was seen in this tournament once again tonight, with Eshan Malinga dismantling the Delhi Capitals’ batting order.

Check Out: Why Sunrisers Hyderabad Beat Delhi Capitals. The 25-year-old bowled only one over in the powerplay and conceded nine runs. After the Rahul/Rana partnership was broken in the 10th over, Malinga was immediately brought back to the attack and made a difference immediately.

In the 11th over, bowled by him, the Sri Lankan dismissed the dangerous-looking Nitish Rana. Then, on the very next ball, he bowled David Miller, the man who won DC their last game against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

With two wickets in two overs, Eshan Malinga was on top of the world, and he would not stop making life difficult for Delhi. He was taken off the attack and returned to bowl the 16th over, where he did concede two boundaries from Tristan Stubbs but then had the last say, dismissing him by tricking the South African with a slower ball.

His last over was the 18th, where he conceded just nine runs at the death and took the wicket of Ashutosh Sharma, who has proven himself as a fine finisher in the IPL.

Eshan Malinga’s four-over spell saw him take four wickets and concede just 32 runs at an economy of eight, while defending a 240+ target. More importantly, he took four massive wickets. First, he got DC’s highest run scorer, Nitish Rana, out and then dismissed veteran T20 batter David Miller out for a duck. His third wicket was an in-form Tristan Stubbs, who could have finished the game, while his fourth was a proven finisher in Ashutosh Sharma.

However, despite Eshan’s great performance with the ball, Abhishek Sharma deservedly won the Player of the Match award for his scintillating 135 off 68 not out.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad won this game by 47 runs, restricting Delhi to 195/9. With this win, they surpass the Rajasthan Royals and climb to this on the points table with four wins and three losses in seven games.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Capitals sit fifth in the league with three wins and three losses in six games.
