Half-centuries from Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma made the chase of 160 look routine, as CSK absorbed early pressure and then tightened their grip on the game through a composed and unbeaten 98-run partnership.
For Mumbai Indians, it was another damaging evening in a season that continues to unravel. They posted 159 for 7, a total that felt underwhelming even before CSK began their reply, and their bowlers had no answers once Gaikwad and Kartik found their rhythm.
How Chennai Super Kings Controlled the Chase
CSK lost Sanju Samson cheaply to Jasprit Bumrah in the first over, and Urvil Patel’s 24-run cameo at the top provided early momentum before AM Ghazanfar’s carrom ball bowled him through the gate. At 62 for 2 at the end of the powerplay, the chase was well within reach but not yet settled.
Gaikwad took charge from there. He anchored the innings with quiet authority, reaching his fifty off 34 balls at the start of the 14th over before accelerating sharply, collecting two boundaries in quick succession to shift the pressure firmly onto MI’s bowlers. Kartik, at the other end, complemented him perfectly, looking for the boundary when opportunities presented themselves without taking unnecessary risks. When Ghazanfar returned to the attack, Kartik greeted him with 4, 6, 4 across the over to effectively seal the game. He completed his maiden IPL fifty shortly after, finishing unbeaten on 54 off 40 balls. Gaikwad ended on 67 not out off 48.
MI Fade After Promising Start
Mumbai had given themselves something to defend with a strong powerplay, Naman Dhir and Ryan Rickelton putting on 58 off 32 balls after Will Jacks fell early to Anshul Kamboj. Rickelton was the aggressor, hitting five sixes between himself and Dhir before Noor Ahmad removed him for 37. Suryakumar Yadav chipped in with a brisk 21 off 12 balls to take MI to 90 for 2 at the halfway mark.
From that position of strength, the innings collapsed in slow motion. Tilak Varma came and went quickly. Hardik Pandya struggled to get going. Dhir reached his fifty and then lost his wicket in the same over off Jamie Overton. The lower order contributed little, and MI managed only 69 runs for the loss of five wickets across the final ten overs. A total that had promised 180 or more ended at 159, and Kamboj’s 3 for 32 and Noor’s 2 for 26 reflected how well CSK’s bowlers executed on a two-paced surface.
CSK’s win moves them to sixth on the table, swapping places with Delhi Capitals. Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, remain in ninth, their playoff hopes diminishing with every passing game. They face Lucknow Super Giants on Monday, a match that is rapidly becoming one they simply cannot afford to lose.
