Ashwath Kaushik becomes the youngest to beat a Grand Master
Ashwath, who is eight years and six months old, beat Polish grandmaster Jacek Stopa during the Burgdorfer Stadthaus Open in Switzerland, a very popular global chess tournament.
Ashwath showcased not only his prodigious talents when he defeated a grandmaster at just a young age, but also broke the record of being the youngest-ever player to defeat a GM. In 2022, he won the World Under-Eight Rapid Championship, showing how much of a prodigal talent he possesses.
The record of being the youngest player ever to defeat a chess Grand Master was previously held by Leonid Ivanovic from Serbia, who was eight years and eleven months old when he defeated GM Milko Popchev.
Discussing his amazing achievement, Kaushk had this to say about his win over Stopa –
“It’s a very exciting feeling and amazing to be able to beat my first grandmaster on the board and it’s in classical [chess] so I feel very proud of myself,” he told Star.
This win has not only announced Ashwath’s arrival to the global stage in chess but will also inspire countless others to pursue the popular board game.
