Earlier, India’s ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill raised valid concern points regarding the growing injury list of the Indian cricket team players.
In July, India lost T20I series in Ireland and England and followed it up by conceding the ODI series 2-1 despite winning the first ODI.
Gill pondered over how India would manage to play their best XI in the 2027 World Cup, where, in the new format, India could be playing 11 matches ahead of the semifinal and 13 if they reach the final.
Since the conclusion of the IPL 2026, which stretched for more than two months, India have played one Test match, six ODIs, and nine T20Is in two months but have not been able to field their strongest XI in any match, with some players either rested or injured.
This injury list has included Hardik Pandya, India’s chief balancer in white-ball cricket, Virat Kohli, India’s premier batting superstar, and Jasprit Bumrah, arguably the world’s best bowler.

Hardik Pandya
Hardik has missed all international action since the conclusion of the IPL, missing the ODI series against Afghanistan and the white-ball matches in Ireland and England. In the IPL, Pandya missed four matches due to back spasms.
Hardik is reported to have suffered a leg strain while training in Bengaluru at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE).
When will Hardik return?
Pandya is recovering from a leg injury and is in rehab at the CoE of the BCCI in Bangalore. Pandya is expected to make his comeback in the ODI series against West Indies, which begins on September 27.
Nitish Kumar Reddy
India have been nurturing Nitish Kumar Reddy as the all-rounder backup to Pandya. However, his progress has been hindered due to injuries.
Reddy was ruled out of the UK tour after picking up a quadriceps injury during the ODI series against Afghanistan. He is undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s CoE. Reddy is unlikely to be picked for the Sri Lanka Test series and could be fit in time for the ODIs against West Indies at home in the last week of September.
Harshit Rana
Harshit Rana has cemented himself in the No. 8 position in both the white-ball formats for India. However, he has been ravaged with injuries this year. Harshit missed the T20 World Cup, IPL, and ODIs against Afghanistan due to a knee injury and a consequent surgery.
He returned on the UK tour, playing in five T20Is, but then missed the ODI series on account of a hamstring injury. Harshit is expected to mark his comeback in the ODI series against West Indies in late September.
Jasprit Bumrah
Hailed as the world’s best all-format fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah went the entire T20 World Cup and IPL unscathed before getting a rest for an entire month, missing the matches against Afghanistan, Ireland, and the T20Is against England.
He played in the first two ODIs in England, marking his comeback to the format since the World Cup 2023 final. However, he missed the series-deciding 3rd ODI after damaging his left knee, which swelled up after an impact injury sustained in the field in the 2nd ODI.
Bumrah is likely to return for the Test series in Sri Lanka, starting on August 15.
Washington Sundar
Washington Sundar has found a place in India’s XI across the three formats under Gautam Gambhir. He recently suffered a hamstring injury in the 2nd ODI against England, which forced him to be ruled out of the third ODI.
As per a report, Sundar is likely to be ruled out of the 1st Test in Sri Lanka, and his participation in the 2nd Test is uncertain yet.
Varun Chakravarthy
Former No. 1 ICC T20I bowler Varun Chakravarthy hasn’t had an ideal year. His performances have been inconsistent, and he’s been in a rut of injuries since the IPL.
Chakravarthy sustained a foot injury during the IPL, after which he underwent rehab at the CoE. Varun missed the two-match T20I series in Ireland, where India felt his absence while going 2-0 down.
Chakravarthy featured in three T20Is against England before missing the last two T20Is as he suffered a hamstring injury, which also meant he was ruled out of the Zimbabwe T20I tour.
When is India’s next T20I series?
India’s next T20I series is in October against West Indies at home, starting October 6, when Varun Chakravarthy is expected to make his comeback.
Prince Yadav
Fast bowler Prince Yadav is the latest addition to India’s injury list. He picked up a hamstring niggle during the 2nd T20I against Zimbabwe. He left the field after bowling eight deliveries.
Prince was ruled out of the 3rd T20I against Zimbabwe.
Mohammed Siraj
Ever since making a splash in international cricket in 2020/21 BGT, Siraj has been the workhorse of the Indian cricket team across all three formats. In this period, he was dropped from both white-ball formats but managed to make a comeback; Siraj replaced Harshit in the T20 World Cup and was part of the trophy-winning squad.
However, Siraj’s body eventually needed a long rest, which the BCCI decided to give him last month. The selectors had named Siraj in the T20I squads for the UK tour, but he was later withdrawn to manage his workload on the suggestion of the medical team.
Siraj was not included in the ODI squad to face England either. He is expected to return in August on the Test tour of Sri Lanka.
