For the first time in the 50+ year-long history of ODI cricket, two-time world champions in the format, the West Indies, have three centurions in a single innings. This record was set with 100s by John Campbell, team captain Shai Hope, and Amir Jangoo.
The second India vs West Indies ODI is currently being played at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. Just like the first match, after winning the toss on a flat deck, India decided to field first, putting themselves in a challenging position.
India vs West Indies: Three West Indies 100s Vs India Breaks Records
The innings was opened for the West Indies by John Campbell and Keacy Carty. Carty, who usually bats at No. 3, was pushed up the order because Justin Greaves, who scored a century in the first ODI, was out due to a calf injury.
The opening pair, after a 100+ partnership in the first match of this series, made just 37 runs together. At the end of the fifth over, Carty was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna, who was in for a challenging day with the ball ahead.
This brought in skipper Shai Hope to the middle. By this time, Campbell had already gotten off to a decent start, having scored 22 off 21. But after the fall of the first wicket, he would turn the gear up and be his team’s primary run scorer for the next while.
John Campbell took only 29 deliveries to reach his half-century, doing so in the eighth over. Then, by the end of the 10th, he had raced up to 69 off 39. Meanwhile, the captain was playing a supporting role at 12 off 12. The team score by this point was 96/1.
For the next 10 overs, the script remained the same; Campbell took charge of scoring runs, while Hope rotated strike. John Campbell scored West Indies’s first 100 in this game, reaching the milestone in the 18th over in just 65 deliveries.
Soon after making his hundred, Campbell was dismissed in the 18th over by Gurnoor Brar for 101 off 68. This brought Amir Jangoo to strike.
By this time, the pitch had settled down, and coupled with his dismissal of the in-form batter, the Indian bowlers sensed an opportunity for a comeback.
However, the Windies kept up the pace, taking the score from 158/2 at the end of the 20th over to 234/2 at the end of the 30th. Hope reached his 50 in the 24th over in 49 balls and generally played a run-a-ball innings following that. On the other end, Jangoo wasn’t much quicker by the end of the 30th, batting at 44 off 38.
Amir Jangoo reached his half-century in the 33rd over in 44 balls, making it back-to-back fifties in this series.
The skipper picked the pace up ever so slightly after the 30th over. He took 90 balls to reach his ton in the 39th over, becoming his team’s second centurion of the match.
On the other end, Amir Jangoo had increased his strike rate considerably. So much so that by the end of the 40th over, at which point Shai Hope was dismissed for 104 off 94 by Kuldeep Yadav, Amir stood at the other end on 99 off 69.
And on the very first ball of the 41st over, he reached his century, becoming Windies’ third centurion in this match and taking just 70 deliveries to reach the milestone.
Amir Jangoo was dismissed in the 43rd over by Ravindra Jadeja, before which he made 114 off 77 and set up his team for a 400+ total.
With three centurions in one match, West Indies had three batters score a ton in a single ODI for the first time ever. But this was not the end of the records for the Windies.
The West Indies ended their innings at 405/7. This is the first time that the two-time ODI world champions have scored 400 runs or more in an ODI innings.
The Men in Blue now have a massive target against them. If they are to lose this match, this India vs West Indies ODI series will need the third-and-final match to decide its winner.
