India beat New Zealand by 4 wickets in the 1st India vs New Zealand ODI at Vadodara on January 11, 2026. Chasing a target of 301, India finished at 306/6 in 49 overs. KL Rahul hit the winning six in the final over after India needed just one run.

New Zealand scored exactly 300/8 in 50 overs after being put in to bat. Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls gave New Zealand a strong start with a 100-plus opening stand. Nicholls scored 62 before Harshit Rana took the first wicket. Daryl Mitchell was the top scorer for New Zealand with 84 before being dismissed by Prasidh Krishna.

India’s chase began steadily with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Rohit scored 26 before being caught off Kyle Jamieson. Gill made 56 before being dismissed by Adithya Ashok. Virat Kohli anchored the innings and scored 93 off 91 balls but missed his century when he was caught by Michael Bracewell. Kohli also crossed 28,000 international runs during his innings.

After Kohli’s dismissal, India suffered a middle-order collapse as Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, and Harshit Rana got removed. KL Rahul held his nerve in the final overs. India needed 5 runs off 8 balls when Rahul hit a four off Kristian Clarke, easing the pressure. He then finished the match with a six, sealing a 4-wicket win for India in the first ODI.

Virat Kohli Becomes Fastest Batter to 28,000 International Runs during India vs New Zealand 1st ODI

Virat Kohli has become the fastest player to reach 28,000 runs in international cricket during the first match of the India vs New Zealand ODI series. He reached the milestone by hitting a shot off spinner Adithya Ashok. This was another major achievement in his long international career.

Kohli is now only the third player in cricket history to score 28,000 runs across all formats. The other two players in this list are Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara. Kohli reached the mark at the age of 37.

He broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record by reaching 28,000 runs in his 624th innings since making his international debut in 2008. Tendulkar had reached the same milestone in 644 innings, while Sangakkara took 666 innings to get there. This means Kohli was 20 innings faster than Tendulkar.

The record six came off his second maximum in the run chase, making him the only batter with more than 600 sixes across all international formats.

Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi has 476 sixes and is the only other player apart from Rohit and Gayle to cross 400. Among Indian players, MS Dhoni is next on the list with 359 international sixes.

Rohit has also scored over 20,000 runs in international cricket. He is one of only four Indian players to achieve this mark.
