Team India completed a stunning whitewash over Afghanistan in the IND vs AFG three-match ODI series with three clinical victories.
The visitors had little to take away from their tour of India after losing the one-off Test match in Mullanpur, followed by being blanked 3-0 in the ODI series.
India registered a 7-wicket victory in the 1st ODI in Dharamsala and then hammered Afghanistan by 170 runs in the 2nd ODI in Lucknow to seal the series.
The third and last ODI of this rubber ended sooner than many would have anticipated in Chennai. A five-for from Prasidh Krishna helped India bowl Afghanistan out for 218 in 44.2 overs before a century from Yashasvi Jaiswal and 79 from Rohit Sharma propelled India to the target in only 28.4 overs.
The action for Team India moves thick and fast as only five days later, the Men in Blue will take on Ireland in a two-T20I series before meeting England in a five-match T20I series, which will be followed by a three-ODI series.
Let us try to predict the 15 or 16-member squad that the BCCI is likely to pick for the IND vs ENG three-match ODI series.
IND vs ENG: Will Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli play against England in ODI series?
Talking of the injured players: Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli both missed the ODI series against Afghanistan due to leg strain and hamstring injury, respectively. Hardik has reportedly been ruled out of next month’s T20I and ODI series against England, while Kohli will undergo another fitness test before the squad is picked for the England ODI series.
Kohli will be aiming to get back to full fitness and feature in the ODIs against England because the ODI series for India after the England tour will be in the last week of September, at home against the West Indies.
Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja all were rested from the ODIs against Afghanistan. All three of them are expected to be named in the squad for the IND vs ENG ODI series.
Meanwhile, in the absence of the senior players, Jaiswal, Gurnoor Brar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ishan Kishan, and Harsh Dubey all made impressive shows against Afghanistan, with the two left-handed batsmen blasting centuries.
Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh, too, performed brilliantly after an underwhelming IPL season. Harshit Rana has regained his fitness and was part of the squad for the 3rd ODI and is expected to be picked for the England tour.
In the third ODI in Chennai, Rohit cracked 79 (69) to remind everyone of his prowess amid rumors of retirement.
It could be said wisely that only Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav among the first-choice players failed to leave a mark on the series.
