IND vs SA 1st Test Match Report: After a thrashing by an innings and 32 runs, India captain Rohit Sharma conceded that India simply “were not good enough to win” by the performances most of their batters and bowlers put up in the 1st Test against South Africa in Centurion.
In his career’s last Test series, Dean Elgar finally notched up his first Test hundred at his adopted home ground, the SuperSport Park in Centurion. The left-hander cracked 185 runs in South Africa’s only innings. Elgar was even asked to lead South Africa after regular skipper Temba Bavuma left the field on Day 1 in the first session with a hamstring strain.
IND vs SA 1st Test Match Report:
On either side of South Africa piling up 408 runs, the Protea pacers ran riot for most parts of India’s batting time.
Bavuma elected to bowl first on a spicy, greenish surface with overcast conditions. His decision was vindicated soon when India were reduced to 24/3 in the first hour and then to 121/6 after lunch. KL Rahul, returning to the Test XI, this time in the role of a wicketkeeper and middle-order batter, put up perhaps his finest Test century, which helped India reach a fighting total of 245 runs.
Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj started off superbly, the latter claiming the wicket of Aiden Markram. However, Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna were poor with their lengths and offered freebies for Elgar and other Protea batters to score and score quickly.
While Bumrah made efforts with a two-wicket burst, Elgar and debutant David Bedingham, who scored 56 runs, once again took the game slowly away from India. India’s bowling unraveled when Marco Jansen got in the act and scored 84* runs; India now batted out of the game.
Rabada started off India’s second innings with a vicious delivery to Rohit Sharma that knocked the off-stump back. Barring Virat Kohli, none of the batters really looked comfortable. Only Kohli and Shubman Gill (26 runs) got into double digits. In the end, Kohli remained stranded on 76* in 82 balls.
According to the India vs South Africa Report, Bavuma has been ruled out from the Cape Town Test. Elgar will lead South Africa in his last career Test. For India, Ravindra Jadeja, who missed the Centurion Test due to neck spasms, is likely to be fit for the New Year’s Test. India might also ponder replacing Shardul/Prasidh with Mukesh Kumar.
