Which is the greatest bowling spell of all time? Unlike ranking batsmen by their runs, a great bowling spell cannot be measured by wickets alone. It is about context. The match situation. The quality of the opposition. The conditions. The pressure of the occasion.

At IceCric, we understand this debate is about more than numbers. It is about the moments that stopped the world. That turned matches on their head. We have taken on the task of ranking the greatest bowling spells ever delivered.

We analysed match-winning performances across formats. In this feature, we break down the spells that have not only filled scorebooks but have become part of cricketing folklore.

Top 5 Best Bowling Spells of All Time According to IceCric

1. Jim Laker – 10/53 vs Australia, 1956

This is the gold standard of bowling performances and a statistical anomaly that is unlikely ever to be repeated. In the fourth Test of the 1956 Ashes at Old Trafford Laker produced the greatest match figures in Test history on a rain affected pitch that offered significant turn. He bowled an astonishing 68 overs in the match and finished with a world record haul of 19 wickets for 90 runs.

His first innings figures were an incredible 10 for 53 from 51.2 overs. To put this into perspective no other England bowler took a wicket in that innings. Laker was an off spinner who was virtually unplayable on that day. His accuracy and turn dismantled the Australian batting lineup completely. The performance remains the best bowling figure in a Test innings and is a record that has stood for decades.

2. Richard Hadlee – 9/52 vs Australia, 1985

Regarded by a detailed ESPNcricinfo ratings system as the greatest Test bowling performance of all time Sir Richard Hadlee’s spell at the Gabba was a masterclass in swing and seam bowling. New Zealand had never won a Test in Australia before this match. Richard Hadlee in his inimitable style changed that single handedly. On a helpful pitch he moved the ball both ways to confound a strong Australian batting lineup. That lineup included David Boon, Allan Border and Steve Waugh who were all world class players.

His figures of 9 for 52 from 23.4 overs were the best by a New Zealander and led his team to a famous victory. The performance is considered a benchmark of bowling perfection. He was simply unstoppable on that day and his control over swing and seam was extraordinary. This spell announced New Zealand as a serious force in world cricket and Richard Hadlee as one of the greatest fast bowlers to ever play the game. It remains a cherished memory for all Kiwi cricket fans.

3. Bob Willis – 8/43 vs Australia, 1981

In a match that is already cricketing folklore Bob Willis produced a spell of fast bowling that defied logic. After being forced to follow on England were set an improbable target of 130 to win. When they were bowled out for 111 it was Bob Willis who produced an inspired and hostile burst that tore through the Australian batting order. Willis with his trademark mop of curls abandoned his line and length approach to bowl fast and straight.

What followed was a phenomenal display of pace and aggression. He took 8 wickets for just 43 runs as Australia collapsed in dramatic fashion. This incredible spell was described as a sight to savour by the commentators. It gave England a miraculous 18 run victory and kept the Ashes alive. Willis bowled with raw emotion and pure determination that day. His performance is remembered as one of the greatest comeback spells in Test cricket history. This was Bob Willis at his absolute best.

4. Curtly Ambrose – 7/1 vs Australia, 1993

This spell is the definition of destructive fast bowling. Towering at 6 foot 7 inches Curtly Ambrose produced a bowling performance of pure intimidation and precision at the WACA in Perth. The series was tied at 1-1 and the match was effectively decided on the first day itself. In a breathtaking spell Ambrose took seven wickets for just one run in 32 balls. He was relentless and drew edge after edge from the Australian batsmen.

His victims included David Boon and Allan Border in successive deliveries before he cleaned up the rest of the tail. Australia were bowled out for just 119 and lost the match inside three days. It remains one of the most hostile and devastating spells of fast bowling ever witnessed. Ambrose did not just bowl. He terrorised the batsmen with his bounce and accuracy. The WACA pitch was known for pace and bounce and Ambrose used it to perfection. It was fast bowling at its most brutal and effective.

5. Anil Kumble – 10/74 vs Pakistan, 1999

Anil Kumble became only the second bowler in history to take all ten wickets in a Test innings. This was a classic tale of a bowler who never gave up no matter the situation. India had set Pakistan a daunting target of 420 to win. Pakistan began well reaching 101 without loss and threatening to pull off an incredible chase. Then Kumble took over the match.

Bowling with incredible control and bounce he started taking wickets at regular intervals. One by one the Pakistani batsmen fell to his guile and persistence. The entire stadium erupted as he took his tenth and final wicket to bowl Pakistan out for 207. His figures of 10 for 74 from 26.3 overs secured a famous victory for India. Kumble was not a big turner of the ball but his accuracy and bounce made him lethal.
