ICC T20I Team of the Year: India’s Suryakumar Yadav and Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu have been named as the captains of the ICC Men’s and Women’s T20I teams of the year 2023, respectively.
ICC T20I Team of the Year
On Monday, the ICC announced the best XI of the men’s and women’s in the shortest international format for last year, recognizing the “11 outstanding individuals who have impressed throughout 2023, be it with the bat, the ball or their all-round exploits across the calendar year”.
The number 1 ranked ICC Men’s T20I batsman, Suryakumar, has another bumper year in the shortest format: he averaged 48 and struck at 155 in 2023 in T20Is. His India teammates Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravi Bishnoi, and Arshdeep Singh storm into this XI. Phil Salt, who averaged 56 with a strike rate of 169, is the other opener.
Sikandar Raza, who was arguably the best all-rounder in T20Is last year, is the all-rounder here. Mark Chapman, who was impressive with the bat and could bowl part-time, is the second all-rounder. Nicholas Poora, who had a strike rate of 163, is the wicketkeeper.
The lesser-known name here is Alpesh Ramjani of Uganda. With 55 wickets, Ramjani was the highest men’s T20I wicket-taker in 2023. He also scored runs at an average of 28. Ireland’s Mark Adair completes the bowling department.

Coming to the women’s team is filled with world-class all-rounders: 7 of the 11 players picked are proper all-rounders.
Chamari Athapaththu scored 470 runs in the year and was often the lone woman fighting for his side. West Indies’ Hayley Mathews was arguably the best women’s T20I player of the year, topping the run chart with 700 runs and taking 19 wickets. Laura Wolvaardt was the second-highest run-scorer.
As expected, Australian players once again dominated the team. Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney, Ashleigh Gardner, and Megan Schutt are part of this side, while two Englishwomen, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sophie Ecclestone, make their place with match-winning performances. Ecclestone was the best bowler of the year among the top teams, with 23 wickets in 11 outings.
