GM Vidit Gujrathi Stuns Chess Champion Magnus
In a recent Pro Chess League online match, of team Indian Yogis became the fourth Indian to defeat Magnus Carlsen, the Norwegian chess master. During the game, Carlsen made a mistake which Gujrathi was able to capitalize on, resulting in a checkmate. The Pro Chess League is an online tournament featuring 16 teams from around the world, playing rapid games for a prize fund of USD 150,000. Carlsen, playing for Canada Chessbrahs, had never before defeated the reigning world champion before this match.
It is worth noting that Vidit Gujrathi’s victory came while playing with the black pieces. He was able to capitalize on a tactical oversight made by his well-known opponent.

By defeating Carlsen, the 28-year-old Gujrathi has joined the ranks of other Indian Grandmasters such as R Praggnanandhaa, D Gukesh, and Arjun Erigaisi. These three Grandmasters had previously achieved victories over the Norwegian superstar in various events last year.
“It is an amazing feeling to defeat the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) of chess and I couldn’t have asked for a better moment,” – Gujrathi said.
During the Pro Chess League match, the Indian team, led by Gujrathi and consisting of Vaishali, Raunak, and Aronyak, emerged victorious against Carslen, Aryan Tari, Razvan Preotu, and Jennifer Yu. As a result, they advanced to the final round with a deficit of only one point.

According to the rules, the team that reaches a score of 8.5 first is declared the winner. The Yogis managed to achieve this by winning on all four boards, with Gujrathi leading the team on the top board.
“Striking victory at the crucial moment and the team winning on all four boards even makes it more special. I’ve come very close on a few occasions to edge over Magnus (Carlsen) but couldn’t capitalise on it,” – Gujrathi said.
