World Cup Group I Predictions: We are just days away from the biggest sporting extravaganza in the world, as the FIFA World Cup 2026 will kick off on Thursday, June 11 (June 12 IST). The competition will be hosted by the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico and will be the biggest edition of the tournament yet, with 48 teams participating.

These 48 teams, several of them having qualified for the World Cup for the first time, have been divided into 12 groups of four teams each.

Each side will go up against the other in a group once. After each team has played their three games, the nations that finish in the top two in their group will qualify for the Round of 32. But that just gives us 24 teams, leaving eight more qualification spots. And so, the eight best-performing third-placed sides will also make it to the knockout rounds.

World Cup Group I Predictions

Today, we will predict how Group I of the FIFA World Cup 2026 will shape up at the end of the group stage. This might be the tightest group in the competition, with France, Norway, Senegal, and Iraq being in it.

France, on paper, looks like the best team in the world. Their performances in the last two World Cups suggests that too, as they won in 2018 and reached the final in 2022, losing on penalties. The qualification to this tournament was not difficult for them. In the first round of UEFA World Cup qualifiers, they won their group convincingly to confirm a spot.

Norway has qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time this century, last doing so in 1998. Their presence in this group gives us the tantalising possibility of an Mbappe vs Haaland match. They qualified for this World Cup by topping their five-team group in the first round of UEFA qualifiers, finishing over Italy.

Senegal are your defending African Champion, or they were for about three months. One of the strongest teams in Africa, they won the AFCON final against Morocco, only for the result to be reverted months later. They qualified for the World Cup by topping their first round group in CAF qualifiers.

Lastly, Iraq had qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 40 years, last doing so in 1986. They finished first in their AFC second round group to make it to the third round, where they finished third behind Japan and Jordan to fall into the fourth round. Iraq became the team with the longest qualifying campaign when they finished second in their fourth round group and went into the fifth and final round, winning which took them to the inter-confederation playoff, where Iraq triumphed over BOlivia to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Now, let’s see who will make it to the Round of 32 from Group I –

Group I has one team that looks stronger than the rest. But this group also has the potential to give us one of those famous World Cup upsets.

France has an abundance of world class players in their squad. So much so that they can field two world-class playing XIs. Since qualifying for the World Cup last year, their form has been excellent, with wins over Brazil and Colombia. There came a slight hiccup of a narrow defeat to the Ivory Coast, but for all intents and purposes, they are ready to challenge for the title.

The French will be captained in the FIFA World CUp 2026 by their star-player Kylian Mbappe, and managed by the legendary Didier Deschamps. While their entire squad has the ability to be one of the standout players in this competition, some of the players to look out for are – Michael Olise of Bayern Munich, Désiré Doué of PSG, William Saliba of Arsenal, and N’Golo Kanté of Fenerbahce

Norway is seeing somewhat of a golden generation right now, with some of the best players in the world in their positions representing the nation. Their recent performances show that they are a middle-of-the-pack team, one that will likely make it to the playoffs. They drew against Swotzer;amd and Monaco, defeated Sweden, and lost to the Netherlands in friendlies this year.

The Norwegians will be captained by their midfield talisman Martin Ødegaard in the FIFA World Cup 2026, and will be managed by former Copenhagen and Wolves managed Ståle Solbakken. However, the face of the side in this tournament, and for years to come will be star-striker Erling Haaland. Other standout players include goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland of Sevilla, forward Alexander Sørloth of Atlético Madrid, and midfielder Sander Berge of Fulham.

Senegal is one of the strongest non-European/South American team in this World Cup. Since their AFCON final result was overturned earlier this year, they have been in solid form, defeating Peru and The Gambia convincingly, they did lose a tight friendly against the United States earlier this month.

The Senegalese national team will be captained in the FIFA WOrld Cup 2026 by their defensive rock, Kalidou Koulibaly, and managed by Pape Thiaw. Some of the players that will make an impact in this competition include legendary winger Sadio Mané, goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, striker Nicolas Jackson of Chelsea, Iliman Ndiaye of Everton, and defensive midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye.

Finally, Iraq. Last year, they made their way to the quarterfinals of the FIFA Arab Cup, losing to Jordan in their last game. Since then, they have defeated Bolivia and Andorra, lost to Venezuela, and drew against the mighty Spain in friendlies.

Iraq will be captained in this World CUp by veteran goalkeeper Jalal Hassan, and managed by former Australian national team manager Graham Arnold. Some of the players to watch out for in this squad are – Ali Al-Hamadi, the striker who was instrumental in Ipswich’s promotion to the Premier League last season, and the incredibly named Zidane Iqbal of Utrecht, who spent his youth career for Manchester United.

World Cup Group I Predictions –

  • France vs Senegal: France wins
  • Iraq vs Norway: Norway wins
  • France vs Iraq: France wins wins
  • Norway vs Senegal: draw

  • Senegal vs Iraq: Senegal wins
