CSK got knocked out of the IPL 2024, failing to reach the playoffs only for the third time in their history of 15 seasons. RCB continued their dream run to win six games in a row and reach the playoffs, an aspiration that looked improbable when they had lost seven of their first eight matches.
RCB posted 218 runs, but CSK needed 201 runs to qualify for the playoffs. The equation came down to CSK needing 17 runs off six balls. The 42-year-old Dhoni smashed a 110-meter six on the first ball. However, Dayal had Dhoni caught at deep square leg on the next ball with a slower delivery. The former CSK captain was dismissed for 25 (13). Dayal used his variations and smarts against Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja and sent RCB into the playoffs, knocking CSK out.
Dhoni finished the IPL 2024 season with 161 runs scored in 73 balls, managing a bumper strike rate of 220. He walloped 14 fours and 13 sixes this season.
Fans have strongly been speculating that the IPL 2024 season is the last IPL tournament for the former CSK captain. Dhoni will turn 43 in July. He’s been dealing with a knee injury since last year, for which he underwent surgery after taking CSK to the trophy in the IPL 2023.
Ahead of the start of the IPL 2024 season, he handed over the CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was impressive as a captain in leading CSK to seven wins while missing Pathirana and Mustafizur in the last few matches and Devon Conway throughout the season.
After CSK’s loss against RCB, which meant the end of the road for the defending champions this season, fans trended the “End of an Era” tweets and paid tribute to Dhoni as they felt the 42-year-old wouldn’t play in the IPL next season.
