The Brazilian football team has suffered a huge blow less than two months away from the FIFA World Cup 2026, as Eder Militao has been ruled out for months due to injury, leaving him out of the national squad for the World Cup.
Brazil struggled during the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers. The five-time champions finished fifth in the South American qualifying round, where only six teams ensured automatic qualification. Many of the major national team stars have struggled with form while playing for the Selecao.
With their chances of a successful World Cup campaign already in question, they suffer another massive blow, as defender Eder Militao is confirmed to miss out on the biggest football competition in the world.
Eder Militao Misses The World Cup Due To Injury
Militao, who plays for Real Madrid, suffered a severe hamstring injury, the biceps femoris muscle in his left thigh, in a game against Alaves on April 21, 2026. Initially, the injury was expected to heal by the end of the season, leaving the 28-year-old ready in time for the World Cup. That, however, was not going to happen.
Over the last 24 hours, Brazilian sport reporter Cahe Mota, along with several Spanish media houses, has confirmed that Militao’s injury is more serious than previously expected. Instead of missing just a month or so due to his hamstring injury, he will be out for as long as four months.
With the FIFA World Cup 2026 less than two months away, the Brazilian centre-back will surely be out of contention for the tournament.
Eder Militao has had a long history of injuries. Formerly of FC Porto, the Sao Paulo-native joined Real Madrid in 2019. He did not take the time to establish himself as one of the finest defenders in world football.
Now in the prime age of his football career, Militao is still considered one of the best in the world when he is fit. The problem is, he isn’t 100% often.
In the 2025-26 season itself, he has suffered two injuries. First, in November 2025, he suffered an injury in his adductor magnus muscle during an international break and was out for two weeks. Then came a big one, a tear of his biceps femoris, the same muscle he had injured now, in December 2025. He was out for about four months and only returned to the field in March 2026.
Militao has had a long history of injuries while playing for Real Madrid. In the last seven years, he has missed a total of 152 games due to being on the shelf, having only played 194 games for Los Blancos in that time.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be played in the United States, Canada, and Mexico and will commence on June 12. Brazil is in Group C of the competition alongside Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland. Their first match of the tournament will be against Morocco on June 14 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
