GT captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl first. Prithvi Shaw creamed a cover drive boundary on the first ball, and DC got off to a quickfire start by Shaw and Jake Fraser-McGurk, the pair scoring 34 runs in 3 overs. But pacer Sandeep Warrier dismissed both openers in the same over and then got rid of Shai Hope in his next over as DC ended the powerplay at 44/3.
Axar Patel was promoted to number 3. He and Pant then manufactured a mega partnership of 113 (68). The best of their shots came against Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad, the two DC lefties slogging the Afghan duo for sixes.
GT’s death-overs specialist, Mohit Sharma, was introduced in the 12th over. He was walloped everywhere by Axar and Pant. Mohit ended with the worst bowling figures ever in IPL history: 0/73. In the last over of DC’s innings, Mohit was smoked for four sixes and a four by Pant, who showcased his elite range to end with 88* (43).
Around Pant, Axar smashed 66 (43) and Tristan Stubbs clobbered 26 runs off just 7 balls as DC ended with 224/4.

In the chase, Saha, too, started off with a first-ball four. GT lost their captain, Gill, in the second over, before Saha and Sai Sudharsan forged a brilliant second-wicket stand of 82 (49).
Saha (39 off 25) and Azmatullah Omarzai fell in quick succession. While David Miller whacked boundaries from his end, GT seemed to be losing their way with wickets of Sudharsan (65 off 39), Shahrukh Khan, and Rahul Tewatia, with Kuldeep and medium-pacer Rasikh Dar Salam making impacts with the ball.
Miller kept GT alive in the chase with his powerful hitting, which included blasting 24 runs off an Anrich Nortje over. Miller (55 off 23) was dismissed in the 18th over by Mukesh Kumar, and the game was all but in DC’s pocket. Wait, not yet.
In the 19th over, Rashid and Sai Kishore plundered Salam for four and two sixes, but Salam castled Kishore. With 19 needed off 6 balls, Rashid whipped Mukesh for two fours on the first two balls. However, with Mohit at the other end, he couldn’t take a single on the next two balls.
With 11 needed off 2 balls, Rashid pumped Mukesh for a six-over long-off, but Mukesh kept his cool on the last ball to deliver a low full toss under which Rashid couldn’t get a proper connection. Pant and DC breathed a sigh of relief as they escaped a huge scare from Rashid.
