Dattajirao Gaekwad Passes Away at 95: Former Indian Test captain Dattajirao Gaekwad has passed away. He was 95 years old at the time of his passing on Tuesday, February 13. He died in a hospital in Baroda due to age-related illness.
Gaekwad, who was the oldest living Test cricketer in India when alive, made his debut for the national team in 1952, on independent India’s first tour to England.
An irregular part of the squad, he was named India’s captain for the 1959 tour to England. Where despite suffering from typhoid, he played four out of five Tests and the majority of first-class games.

Dattajirao is also considered a legend of Baroda cricket. In his first-class career of 110 matches, he scored 5788 runs and took 25 wickets. He scored 17 centuries, 23 half-centuries, and multiple double centuries in his career. In the 1957-58 Ranji season, he captained Baroda to their first title in almost a decade, scoring a century in the final against Services.
However, his Test career wasn’t as successful. Across a career that spanned nine years, from 1952 to 1961, Dattajirao Gaekwad only played 11 matches, scoring 350 runs with an average of 18.42. He did make headlines in England for his innings of 176 against a mighty Yorkshire team during the 1959 tour.
Dattajirao’s son, Anshuman Gaekwad had a more successful career for the national side, playing 40 Test matches as an opener and scoring 1985 runs from 1974 to 1984.
