The Chennai Super Kings won their second game in a row as they defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders. But why did KKR lose to CSK in this game?
The game was Match 22 of IPL 2026. It was played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and saw the away team win the toss and decide to bowl first. The Super Kings got off to a solid start. Despite losing regular wickets, their entire batting order kept on striking well, and they ended their innings on 192/5.
In response, the Knight Riders lost an early wicket and never kept up with the required run rate. Regular wickets meant they kept falling away from the touchline. The tired-looking Kolkata innings ended at 160/7, as they lost this game by 32 runs.

1) A Well-Rounded Batting Order
The Chennai Super Kings displayed the sheer depth and well-roundedness of their batting order tonight. The pitch at the Chepauk was a tricky one tonight. This was not a 200+ track. Despite that, CSK did the best with the lemons they were served.
While captain Ruturaj Gaikwad suffered a fifth dud of an innings in IPL 2026, Sanju Samson did well in a second straight match. He hit three boundaries in the very first over and was instrumental in taking the score to 72 runs in the powerplay. He would go on to make 48 off 32.
Ayush Mhatre provided some well-needed push in the run chase after an early wicket. He got out on the final ball of the powerplay after making 38 off 17.
Dewald Brevis had been the missing link in this batting order; his 41 off 29 in the middle overs were essential in keeping this innings on track despite wickets kept falling at regular intervals.
Sarfaraz Khan saw off the spin trio of Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy, and Anukul Roy in the middle overs. While his 23 off 18 might look slow, that was the perfect innings at that point in the game.
And while Shivam Dube and Jamie Overton did not capitalise on the momentum to push the score past 200, in the end, a total of 192 was enough for this pitch, especially against this opposition.

2) Taking Wickets At Crucial Moments
The biggest difference for the Super Kings in the past two games has been their bowling. First, they handled business against the Delhi Capitals to register their first win, and today, they did the same to bury the Knight Riders.
KKR lost an early wicket today, as Anshul Kambhoj dismissed Finn Allen in the second over for one off three balls. Captain Ajinkya Rahane came in to bat at No. 3, as Sunil Narine opened the batting today.
This was not to be a successful experiment, as Narine made 24 off 17 in the powerplay and was out in the fifth over.
Next would come the pressure of spin. While Kolkata did not lose any more wickets for five more overs, they remained behind the required run rate.
Angkrish Raghuvanshi departed in the 10th over after playing a decent knock of 27 off 19. Rahane departed soon after, in the 11th for 28 off 22.
With their entire top order gone, KKR needed a partnership if they were to remain in this game. However, at such a crucial moment, two wickets fell within the span of two overs. First, on the last ball of the 11th, Cameron Green was bowled for a golden duck. Then, in the 13th, Rinku Singh went for six off 12 after a stunning catch by Sarfaraz in the slips.
While runs were made by the death batting specialists Rovman Powell and Ramandeep Singh, who made 31 off 22 and 35 off 23, they were never able to accelerate, and the Knight Riders ended their innings at 160/7.
3) The Spin Strikes
The Chennai Super Kings’ bowling was their dominant department for today. And in that, the spin duo of Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hossein won them the match.
Akeal was introduced into the attack first, in the sixth over, where he only conceded five runs. He took his first and only wicket in his third over, dismissing Raghuvanshi. Before that point, this batter was dropped twice, but this time, he was out. Akeal Hossein finished his four-over spell with respectable figures of 1/26.
Then comes Noor Ahmad. He conceded 10 runs in his first over and was immediately taken off the attack. Only after Angkrish’s wicket did he return to bowling and immediately make an impact.
In the 11th over, Noor took back-to-back wickets. First dismissing the opposition skipper, Ajinkya Rahane, before cleaning out Cameron Green for a golden duck. He would later go on to take the wicket of Rinku Singh as well, finishing his spell with dominant figures of 3/21.
