A couple of interesting events took place on social media on Friday with regard to former India captain Rohit Sharma.
Out of nowhere, news outlets sparked up reports that Rohit will potentially be playing his last international match on Saturday in the IND vs AFG 3rd ODI, scheduled to be played in Chennai.
Soon after, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia spoke with news agency PTI and made comments on the World Cup 2027 planning of the board, selectors, and team management.
Is Rohit Sharma retiring from ODI cricket?
As per news channel DY365, the BCCI has reportedly told Rohit that he is not part of the selectors’ plans for the 2027 World Cup owing to his age and fitness; Rohit will be 40 years old when the next ODI World Cup rolls over in October 2027. Further, the channel claimed that Saturday’s ODI match against Afghanistan will be Rohit’s last in India’s colors.
This news buzzed the fans and spread like wildfire on social media, with fans pointing out that Rohit looked fluent during his knock of 48 (39) in the previous ODI against Afghanistan in Lucknow as he blasted two sixes and six fours. Rohit, however, struggled in the IPL 2026 for both form and fitness, managing 283 runs in the season in nine innings while missing five games due to a hamstring strain.
Whatever decisions are made involve the head coach: Devajit Saikia
Meanwhile, after this rumor took flight among the fans, PTI posted a video of the BCCI secretary in which he was asked about the preparations for the 2027 World Cup.
Saikia remained reserved over the BCCI’s plans but confirmed that the decisions taken will be made after discussions with the selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
The BCCI secretary told PTI, “As the head of the board, we have a very well-knit team and a lot of experts. All stakeholders are taken on board. Whatever decisions are made involve the cricket committee, the selectors and all other stakeholders, including the support staff, the head coach and the players concerned. There are regular conversations taking place.
“For that reason, we do not need any special session of interaction. This is an ongoing process. Further, I do not think I should disclose anything before the media or the public because these are strategic discussions. I am not authorised to speak about them before the media. Secondly, these are matters that should remain within the boardroom.”
After the IND vs AFG ODI series, India’s next ODI series will be another three-ODI series in July in England. Virat Kohli, who missed the Afghanistan series owing to a hamstring injury, is expected to return for the series against England from July 14.
