BCCI Announces India Squad For T20 World Cup: BCCI announced India’s squad for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup, which will start on June 2 in the West Indies and the United States. To the surprise of no one, most big names make the squad with a few exceptions.
As expected, Rohit Sharma will captain the team, with Yashasvi Jaiswal as his opening partner. Suryakumar Yadav will also be one of the star batters expected to be in the playing XI.
There was much debate around Virat Kohli’s name leading up to the squad announcement. Well, the former India captain did make it into the squad and will play an integral part in India’s campaign.
Another massive talking point was the race of wicketkeepers to the squad. The name of Rishabh Pant was all but confirmed as soon as he recovered from injury, and he did make the squad. The second keeper, on the merit of his strong performances in the ongoing IPL, is Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson, who will be playing in his first World Cup. This means the likes of KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan don’t make the cut.
Despite a poor ongoing spell in the IPL, Hardik Pandya is picked in the side and will also be the team’s vice-captain. Yet another name who will be playing in his first World Cup is Shivam Dube, who has been in sensational form for the Chennai Super Kings for the past two years.
Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel will be the spin-allrounders in the team, while Kuldeep Yadav will be the first proper bowler. A man who is making his return to the national side after over a year is Yuzvendra Chahal, who recently became the first bowler to pick 200 wickets in the IPL.
Now remains the pace-trio of the team, and there are no surprises here. Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Siraj round out the 15-man squad.
There are also four reserve players. Shubman Gill missed out on the 15-man squad due to a dip in form in the last six months.
The biggest surprise omission in the squad is Rinku Singh, who has been awesome for India in T20Is in the last year; he too is part of the reserves.
The last two names on the reserve list are the pace duo of Khalil Ahmed and Avesh Khan, who have been in some fine form recently.
