Aakash Chopra On Mumbai Indians Batting Collapse: Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra explained and broke down Mumbai Indian’s top-order batting collapse against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
MI took on KKR in Match 51 of the IPL 2024 in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. The home team put their opponents on the back foot immediately with early wickets, as the Knight Riders lost five wickets in just seven overs. But then Venkatesh Iyer (79) and Manish Pandey (42) rescued the inning and took them to 169 runs.
In response, Mumbai’s innings started coming off the seams right from the start. The team lost Ishan Kishan, Naman Dhit, and captain Rohit Sharma in the powerplay. No batter besides Suryakumar Yadav could hold onto their wickets as dismissals came at regular intervals.
The Mumbai Indians were bowled out in the 19th over for 145, winning the match by 24 runs. Mitchell Starc picked up four wickets on the day and was named the Player of the Match.

Reviewing the fame on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra highlighted how it was the failure of MI’s top order that resulted in the team losing the match. He said:
“They played cautiously against Vaibhav Arora in the first over, but Mitchell Starc came after that. The first ball was very good, and then Ishan Kishan hit a fantastic shot over cover, followed by a flicked six. After that, Mitchell Starc blew away his stumps and bails. Then Shreyas Iyer brought Varun Chakaravarthy into the powerplay, and Naman Dhir was dismissed. He is a good player, but he had a bad shot at that point in time.”
Chopra then commented on how Rohit Sharma has not been performing for a few matches now.
“Sunil Narine dismissed the Indian captain, Rohit Sharma. This is the fourth consecutive inning in which he hasn’t scored runs,” he said.
Sharma has had a solid IPL 2024 so far. After scoring 326 runs in 11 matches, he is the second-highest run-scorer for his team and is en route to scoring 400 runs in an IPL season for the first time since 2019. He even scored a century this season against arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings.
But for four matches in a row now, Rohit has failed to get a double-digit score for MI.
As for the Mumbai Indians, they are all but out of the tournament with just three wins and six points in 11 matches, being ninth on the table. Their next match is against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at Wankhede Stadium on May 7.
