Hardik Pandya is the current captain, while Mahela Jayawardene is the head coach. The franchise has also been closely associated with some of the biggest names in Indian and international cricket, including Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav.

Mumbai Indians History

Mumbai Indians were one of the eight original teams in the first IPL season in 2008. Sachin Tendulkar was the franchise’s first major icon and played an important role during its early years.

The team reached its first IPL final in 2010 but lost to Chennai Super Kings. MI then went through a major period of growth and began establishing themselves as one of the strongest teams in the competition.

Their breakthrough came in 2013 when they defeated Chennai Super Kings in the final to win their first IPL title. It was the beginning of a highly successful period for the franchise.

The MI won their second championship in 2015, again defeating Chennai Super Kings in the final. They then won their third title in 2017 after beating Rising Pune Supergiant by one run in a closely fought final.

The team won back-to-back titles in 2019 and 2020, defeating Chennai Super Kings in the 2019 final and Delhi Capitals in the 2020 final.

That run established MI as the first team to win five IPL championships.

MI have won five IPL titles, with their championships coming in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.

Mumbai Indians 2013

MI won their first IPL title in 2013 after defeating Chennai Super Kings in the final.

The franchise had previously lost the 2010 final to CSK, making the 2013 victory particularly important. Mumbai produced a strong all-round campaign and eventually lifted their first IPL trophy at Eden Gardens.

Rohit Sharma was a key part of the team and began establishing himself as an important leader. Mumbai also had major contributions from players such as Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga and Dinesh Karthik.

The 2013 season marked the beginning of Mumbai Indians’ golden period.

Mumbai Indians 2015

MI won their second IPL title in 2015.

They defeated Chennai Super Kings in the final after posting 202/5. Rohit Sharma played a major role in the final and was named Player of the Match.

The victory also showed that Mumbai’s 2013 championship was not a one-off success. The franchise had developed into one of the strongest teams in the IPL.

Mumbai Indians 2017

MI won their third title in 2017 after one of the closest finals in IPL history.

They scored 129/8 against Rising Pune Supergiant before defending the total and winning by just one run. Mumbai became the first team to reach three IPL championships, moving ahead of the other franchises at that time.

Rohit Sharma captained Mumbai in the final and became one of the most successful leaders in IPL history.

Mumbai Indians 2019

The MI won their fourth IPL title in 2019.

They faced Chennai Super Kings in the final once again and won by just one run in another extremely close championship match.

The victory gave Mumbai their fourth title and placed them level with Chennai Super Kings at the top of the IPL championship table.

Mumbai Indians 2020

The MI successfully defended their title in the 2020 season.

The tournament was played in the United Arab Emirates because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mumbai finished the competition as the strongest team and defeated Delhi Capitals in the final.

The 2020 championship gave Mumbai five IPL titles in total and made them the first franchise to win the trophy five times. The IPL’s official records list their five championships as 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.

Mumbai Indians Captains

Several players have captained the MI, but Rohit Sharma remains the most successful captain in the franchise’s history.

Rohit took over as captain during the 2013 season and went on to lead Mumbai to five IPL championships. Under his leadership, Mumbai won titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.

Hardik Pandya returned to MI as captain ahead of the 2024 season and remains the team’s captain. The IPL’s official team profile lists Pandya as the current captain.

Rohit Sharma and Mumbai Indians

Rohit Sharma is one of the most important players in Mumbai Indians’ history.

He joined the franchise in 2011 and became captain in 2013. His leadership transformed Mumbai into a consistent title contender.

Rohit led Mumbai to all five of their IPL championships. He also became one of the most successful captains in the history of the competition.

His batting was another major part of Mumbai’s success, particularly during the team’s championship-winning seasons.

Mumbai Indians’ Famous Players

Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar was MI’s first major superstar. He represented the franchise from the inaugural season and remained closely connected with the team after retiring as a player.

Tendulkar won the Orange Cap in 2010 after scoring 618 runs, becoming one of the first major Indian batting stars to dominate an IPL season.

Rohit Sharma

Rohit is the most successful captain in MI history. He led the team to five championships and became one of the franchise’s biggest icons.

Lasith Malinga

Lasith Malinga was one of Mumbai’s most important bowlers during their title-winning years. His unusual action, yorkers and ability to take wickets at the death made him a key part of the team’s bowling attack.

Kieron Pollard

Kieron Pollard spent more than a decade with MI and became one of the franchise’s most recognisable overseas players.

The West Indies all-rounder contributed with both bat and ball and played an important role in several of Mumbai’s championship campaigns.

Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah developed into one of the world’s leading fast bowlers while playing for Mumbai Indians.

He became a central part of Mumbai’s bowling attack and was particularly effective during the middle and death overs.

Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav became one of Mumbai’s most important Indian batters after returning to the franchise in 2018.

His 360-degree stroke play and ability to score quickly in the middle overs made him an important part of Mumbai’s batting line-up.

Mumbai Indians Home Ground

The MI play their home matches at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The stadium has been the franchise’s main home venue since the IPL began. It has hosted several important MI matches, including championship celebrations and playoff games.

Wankhede is also known for its batting-friendly conditions, short boundaries and strong atmosphere during MI matches.

Mumbai Indians 2026 Season

MI had a difficult IPL 2026 campaign.

They played 14 league matches, winning four and losing 10. They finished ninth in the 10-team points table with eight points and a net run rate of -0.584.

Mumbai ended their campaign with a 30-run defeat against Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium on May 24, 2026. Rajasthan scored 205, while Mumbai were restricted to 175. Suryakumar Yadav top-scored for MI with 60 from 42 balls.

The season was also affected by injuries. Quinton de Kock and Raj Angad Bawa were ruled out, with Mahipal Lomror and Ruchit Ahir signed as replacements.

Atharva Ankolekar was another player ruled out during the season, with Mumbai signing Krish Bhagat as his replacement.

Mumbai Indians Current Squad

The IPL’s official team profile lists Hardik Pandya as captain and Mahela Jayawardene as head coach.

The squad retained for the 2026 season included:

  • Hardik Pandya
  • Rohit Sharma
  • Suryakumar Yadav
  • Jasprit Bumrah
  • Tilak Varma

The BCCI confirmed that Mumbai retained 20 players ahead of the 2026 auction, including seven overseas players.

Mumbai Indians Team Ownership

MI are owned by Indiawin Sports Pvt. Ltd, the sports arm of the Reliance group.

The franchise has built a wider global cricket network through its ownership group, with teams and investments connected to MI in other T20 competitions around the world.

MI brand has therefore expanded beyond the IPL and become one of the better-known names in global franchise cricket.

Mumbai Indians Records

MI have won five IPL titles, with their championship seasons coming in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.

Rohit Sharma led all five of those title-winning campaigns.

Mumbai’s 2017 final against Rising Pune Supergiant remains one of the closest IPL finals. MI defended 129 and won by one run.
