Former Indian Cricket Team captain Saurav Ganguly has been appointed as the new head coach of the Delhi Capitals franchise in the Indian premier league, replacing Hemang Badani, who had held that post for the past two seasons.
Ganguly has a long history in cricket administration. After his cricketing career ended in the early 2010s, he became the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal in 2015. He remained the CAB head for four years.

Then, in October 2019, Dada became the president of the board of Cricket Control in India. The highest admin and authoritative organization of the sport in India. He remained the BCCI president for three years, being replaced by Roger Binny in 2022.
The 54-year-old has also had a long history with managing the Delhi Capitals. He was appointed as an advisor for the franchise in March 2019. However, he stayed on the job for a single season, as later that year, he was announced as BCCI president.
In March 2023, Ganguly returned to the Capitals, this time as the Director of Cricket. As a part of this job, he was the ultimate administrative figure of the entire franchise and its ecosystem. This includes both the IPl and WPL teams, talent recruitment, and coaching staff.
While that was his job on paper, it is not entirely known what powers the Director of Cricket holds in an IPL franchise. So it is entirely possible he played nothing more than a nominal role in the running of the franchise.
This is why Saurav Ganguly’s appointment as the head coach of the Capitals is being seen by many as a promotion for the former Indian captain.
As stated before, Ganguly replaced Hemang Badani as DC head coach, a man he once captained in the Indian national team over two decades back.
In his decade and change in coaching, Badani had risen up the ranks quickly. From being the head coach of the Chepauk Super Gillies in the Tamil Nadu Premier League in 2016, where he won the title on four occasions, to becoming the fielding coach for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2021. Then, in 2023, Delhi Capitals made a surprising move when they appointed Hemang Badani as the head coach of the men’s team.
The Delhi-based IPl franchise has not had the best during Badani’s tenure as the team head coach. While they have not finished at or near the bottom of the table at any point in the past three seasons, they have also not made it to the playoffs, trudging along as a mediocre IPL side with a 5th-place and two 6th-place finishes in the league over the last three years.
So, after such a mediocre time at the helm of the Capitals, Hemang Badani has now been ousted from his post and replaced by Saurav Ganguly.
With him still being a part of the DC organisation, Ganguly served as the head coach of the Pretoria Capitals in SA20 in the 2025/26 season, taking the team to the final, where they lost to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Not only does Dada have a short-but-successful tenure as the head coach of a franchise cricket team, he also captained an IPl franchise in his playing days. The Kolkata Knight Riders franchise was partly built on the back of Ganguly, who served as the team captain in two of the first three IPL seasons. He then moved to Pune Warriors India, where he was the captain in the last two years of his active playing career.
The Delhi Capitals have undergone major turmoil in the last few years. From letting go of Shreyas Iyer and making Rishabh Pant the captain to then letting go of Pant and appointing Axar Patel as the team captain. The franchise and its fans would hope the veteran and tenured touch of Saurav Ganguly would be enough to bring some stability and success to the men’s team.
