India trounced Pakistan in a high-scoring IND vs PAK men’s Asian Games final to clinch the gold medal for the second consecutive time.
The Shreyas Iyer-led unit registered a 19-run victory in the final on Saturday in Nisshin. Pakistan, captained by Sahibzada Farhan, will leave Japan with the silver medal, while earlier in the day, Sri Lanka secured the bronze medal by beating Bangladesh in the 3rd place match.
IND vs PAK: Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma fifties power India
Iyer won the toss and elected to bat at the Korogi Sports Park, Nisshin. India got off to a flyer with Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi before the 15-year-old was dismissed and was followed by Sanju Samson.
On a pitch offering turn and bounce, Abhishek monstered his way to 61 runs off 28 balls, but at the other end, Iyer struggled in his knock of 21 runs off 24 balls, and Ishan Kishan managed 20 runs off 18 balls.
India’s innings was given a late boost through a blazing fifty from Tilak Varma, who had hammered a match-winning knock in the Asia Cup final against the same opposition. Tilak blasted 51* off 22 balls, and Shivam Dube clobbered 27 off 15 as India finished with an above-par total of 211.
Pakistan’s chase was a one-man show as Hasan Nawaz, who is known for his six-hitting prowess, walloped 5 fours and 7 sixes in his innings of 96 runs from 51 balls.
He didn’t get much support from other batters – none of the other Pakistani batsmen managed over 30 runs. Eventually, the Men in Green fell 19 runs short of India’s total. For India, Axar, Sundar, and Dube all took two wickets each.
Elated Indian fans celebrated a triumph in the IND vs PAK Asian Games final, which followed the victory of the women’s team in the final against Sri Lanka.
Netizens posted funny memes, hailing the performances of Indian players, in particular Abhishek, Tilak, and Dube, while questions have been raised on the places of Sanju Samson and Ravi Bishnoi.
