Indian Cricket team captain Shubman Gill has scored the fastest double century in ODI cricket. This was also his second 200 in ODIs, making him only the second-ever player to reach the milestone twice in one-day internationals.
The 2nd India vs West Indies ODI is currently being played at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. Despite flat tracks and solid batting conditions, India won the toss and decided to bowl first, taking on the challenge of chasing a big total.
Shubman Gill Scores Fastest 200 in ODI Cricket
The West Indies innings was truly a spectacle. While they did lose their first wicket in the fifth over, the second-wicket partnership between John Campbell and captain Shai Hope, which was worth 110 runs, saw Campbell dominate Indian bowlers and score a century in 65 deliveries.
However, it was after John Campbell got out that an even more valuable partnership brewed. Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo started their partnership at a reduced pace of run scoring but picked up the pace a few overs in.
The third West Indies wicket fell in the 40th over at the score of 329. Hope scored the second century of this innings, making 104 off 94.
Then, in the very next over, Jangoo reached his ton and ended up making 114 off 77. It is the first time that the Windies have three centuries in a single innings in an ODI match and the second team to do it against India in India after South Africa did so back in 2015.
The West Indies ended up making 405 runs in 50 overs, putting a mammoth target ahead of the Men in Blue. For India, the pair of Rohit Sharma and team captain Shubman Gill opened the innings.
Seeing the mountain of a total in front of them, the two gave the Men in Blue a solid start, making 92 runs in the powerplay and not losing any wickets. At this point, Rohit was playing the aggressor, having scored a half-century in 31 balls. Meanwhile, Gill was playing a more mellow, but still decent, pace.
However, by the end of the 16th over, Gill had overtaken Sharma in strike rate. Both batters were batting at 73 balls by this point. But while Rohit had played 54 deliveries, Shubman had played just 45. The skipper first reached his 50 in the 15th over and then started dominating the West Indies bowling attack.
Shubman Gill scored his second century in this series on the first ball of the 21st over, reaching the milestone with a boundary and in only 62 balls.
But he did not stop here. His strike rate only increased from this point on. The captain started hitting a boundary or two in each over and eventually took the run rate near 10 RPO.
By the time Rohit Sharma lost his wicket in the 27th over after scoring his century, Gill was already batting at 145 off 86. And just an over later, he reached another milestone, the 150-run mark, doing so for the second time this year in ODIs, with the first coming against Afghanistan in June.
At the end of the 30th over, Shubman was batting at 171 off 98, tantalisingly close to a double ton. A couple of overs later, Virat Kohli departed for just 29, but the skipper stood his ground and kept the pace up.
Soon enough, Gill was in his 190s, at 192 at the end of the 37th. An over later, he was batting at 199.
Shubman Gill did not waste any time in getting to the milestone, reaching the 200-run mark on the second ball of the 39th over.
He made 200 runs in 117 balls. With that, he broke the record for the fastest double-hundred in ODI cricket, surpassing Ishan Kishan’s record of 126 balls, made against Bangladesh in 2022.
This was also Shubman Gill’s second double-century in ODI cricket. He has now become only the second batter ever to reach this mark twice in the format, only behind Rohit Sharma, who has three.
Shubman’s innings puts his side within reach of not only winning this India vs West Indies match, which would be the second-highest run chase in ODI cricket, but also winning it in dominant fashion.
