In a landmark moment in the career of Mohammed Siraj, the fast bowler has been named the captain of the Hyderabad team for the Ranji Trophy 2026-27. The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) confirmed in a release while naming the squad for Hyderabad’s first two Ranji games of the season.
The HCA also named 32-year-old all-rounder Chama Milind as the vice-captain, who will lead the team whenever Siraj is with the Indian team, unavailable, rested, or injured.
This is the first time Siraj will be holding a leadership position at the top level in his career. It is a testament to the fast bowler’s hard work, as the son of an autorickshaw driver in Hyderabad rises to such high levels in Indian cricket.
Dropped from the T20I side, Siraj will be part of the India vs West Indies ODI series that will be played from September 27 and October 3. He is a key player in India’s preparation for the 2027 World Cup.
When will the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 season start?
The Ranji Trophy 2026/27 season will begin on October 11.
Hyderabad’s first two matches are against Tripura and Andhra. Siraj will lead Hyderabad in these two games. He might also feature in Hyderabad’s third match against Punjab, which is scheduled to start on October 26, unless he is called up to the T20I squad for the tour of New Zealand. The India vs New Zealand T20I series will run from October 22 to November 1.
Siraj will then be expected to lead India’s pace attack alongside Jasprit Bumrah in the ODI and Test series in New Zealand.

Siraj is a two-time T20 World Cup winner now and has featured in 48 Tests, 50 ODIs, and 17 T20Is for India. He has played 94 red-ball first-class games as well, and has emerged as one of the best seam bowlers going around in the world.
Siraj, who helped India achieve the epic Test series win in Australia in 2020/21, was at the forefront of India’s success at the 2-2 drawn Test series last year in England.
When is India’s tour of New Zealand 2026?
The India tour of New Zealand will kick off with a five-match T20I series from October 22. It will be followed by a five-match ODI series from November 4 to 15. Then, the two-match Test series will begin on November 19 in Wellington, with the second Test slated for the last week of November in Christchurch.
