Kobe Bryant was charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman in 2003. The case was dropped before trial because the accuser did not want to testify. A civil lawsuit was settled privately. The details of the settlement have never been made public.

The incident happened on June 30, 2003, at a hotel in Colorado. Bryant was there for knee surgery. He met the woman at the hotel and invited her to his room later. Both agreed they kissed, but they disagreed on what happened next. She said Bryant raped her. He said the sex was consensual.

Prosecutors appeared to have a strong case. The woman had injuries that suggested assault. Her underwear and Bryant’s shirt had blood on them. Bryant told police he had not asked for consent.

The case became a media circus. Bryant’s lawyer attacked the accuser’s reputation in court. She even said the woman’s name publicly. The woman’s identity was leaked multiple times. The case also brought up racial issues, as the accuser was white and Bryant was Black.

The charges were dropped in 2004. Bryant issued a public apology. He said he understood the woman did not see their encounter the same way he did.

Bryant later said he created the “Black Mamba” persona to cope with the ordeal. He also discussed how the case affected his life. His career continued without major interruption. He won two more NBA titles and Olympic gold medals. He also won an Oscar for a short film.

However, the case remained a part of his legacy. In 2018, he was dropped from a film festival jury due to the accusation. When asked about it, he said he was disappointed but focused on telling diverse stories.

Bryant later became a vocal supporter of women’s sports. He coached his daughter’s basketball team and promoted the WNBA. Bryant passed away in a helicopter crash in 2020. His death brought renewed attention to the case.

Why Was Kobe Bryant Fined $100,000 by the NBA in 2011?

Kobe Bryant was fined $100,000 by the NBA in April 2011 for using an anti-gay slur during a game. The incident happened during a Lakers-Spurs game. Bryant was called for a technical foul and argued with referee Bennie Adams. He then used the slur while on the bench. The moment was captured on TNT’s national broadcast.

NBA Commissioner David Stern issued a statement calling Bryant’s remarks “offensive and inexcusable.” He said insensitive or derogatory comments have no place in the game or society.

Bryant also released a statement apologizing. He said the words came out of frustration during the game. He added that the words did not reflect his feelings toward the gay and lesbian communities and were not meant to offend anyone.

The fine came just as the Lakers were heading into the playoffs. The team had been struggling with a five-game losing streak before the win over San Antonio. The incident created a distraction for the defending champions.

Bryant had previously commented on similar issues. In 2007, he criticized former NBA star Tim Hardaway for saying he hated gay people. Bryant said at the time that people need to be open-minded and that there was still a long way to go for acceptance.

The Human Rights Campaign condemned Bryant’s remark. The group said it was a disgrace for him to use such offensive language, especially with millions watching.

The NBA had also recently introduced stricter rules on complaints about technical fouls. Bryant was known for frequently arguing with officials. He had one technical rescinded the day before the incident. The fine was one of the largest the league had issued for such language.
