Sanju Samson dropped from the Zimbabwe T20Is: It has been clear that the BCCI selectors have been looking and planning for the 2028 T20 World Cup from the series right after lifting the 2026 edition.
The first major move made by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee was to replace Suryakumar Yadav, the T20 World Cup-winning captain, with Shreyas Iyer. Iyer hadn’t played a T20I since December 2023 but walked into the team as the new skipper on the back of his IPL performances for KKR and PBKS.
Now, have the selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir made another bold move in potentially dropping Sanju Samson, the Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup, from India’s first-choice opening pair?
It is unfair to drop Samson after only three scores considering his previous three knocks were 97*, 89, and 89 towards the conclusion of the T20 World Cup as the Kerala star established his legacy and propelled India to their third T20 world title.
Samson has managed three single-digit scores on the ongoing tour of the UK and was subsequently replaced by 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the 2nd T20I against England.
However, an even more shocking revelation came when Samson was omitted from the squad for the three-match T20I series in Zimbabwe, scheduled for later this month.
Fans and experts have called for the BCCI, Agarkar, and Gambhir to explain to the fans the reason for Samson’s exclusion from the Zimbabwe tour.
This has led to questions and speculation among the fans and experts about the future of Samson in the T20I team. BCCI sources have unofficially opened up about the Samson topic.
Why is Sanju Samson dropped from the Zimbabwe T20Is?
According to a report in Cricinfo, Samson was not picked for the Zimbabwe T20Is “only because Zimbabwe tour is a fringe series, and the selectors wanted to give exposure to another wicketkeeper-batter in Prabhsimran Singh.” Samson remains part of the India squad for the Asian Games, scheduled for September 2026 in Japan.
This thought process of giving opportunities to players in Zimbabwe has been underlined by the fact that a total of six players, including Samson, who are part of the T20Is against England but have not been selected for the Zimbabwe tour. Those players are Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna.
A BCCI insider told Cricbuzz, “When else can the new players be tried?” asserting the fact that the three T20Is in Harare are being viewed as a chance to try out more players. “The selectors are clearly looking to test a wider pool of players with the 2028 World Cup in mind,” said Cricbuzz.
So it can be inferred that Samson has not been dropped from the India squad for Zimbabwe T20Is, but it is evident that a restructuring around his position is tacitly taking place involving Sooryavanshi, who has shown that he can have a match-defining impact in the powerplay, as the selectors eye the 2028 T20 World Cup.
