For only the third time in IPL 2026, young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was dismissed for a score below 10 out of 10 innings he’s played so far this season.
It happened on Friday evening in Jaipur, where the 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener was sent back to the dressing room after scoring only four runs off two deliveries by Delhi Capitals’ (DC) new ball pacer Kyle Jamieson.
Delhi, who had endured three losses in a row before the RR vs DC fixture, bounced back with a 7-wicket victory at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium to keep themselves well and alive in the playoffs race.
DC had gotten a boost in the form of Mitchell Starc, and the Axar Patel-led think tank also replaced David Miller with Pathum Nissanka.
Both Starc and Nissanka stepped up as pro overseas players and contributed handsomely to the win. The Australian pacer picked up three wickets, those of Jaiswal, Parag, and Jadeja; the Sri Lanka opener cracked 62 off 33 to lay the foundation of the tall chase of 225.
DC’s another overseas star, Kyle Jamieson, made a vital contribution as well. Though the lanky New Zealand pacer went for 48 runs in his four overs, he handed a huge blow to RR in the second over of their innings by getting rid of the in-form Sooryavanshi.
Sooryavanshi is up there in the Orange Cap race, having amassed over 400 runs at an average of 40 and a jaw-dropping strike rate of 237. The youngster has enhanced his reputation so thoroughly this season that he’s become a prized wicket for every opposition and every bowler.
And therefore, the celebration from Jamieson was an animated one: Sooryavanshi is key for RR to get a solid start. For, each delivery Sooryavanshi is at the crease, there is a threat of it being carted for a four or a six.
Sooryavanshi did slam Jamieson for a boundary on the first ball he faced, drilling a full delivery down the ground. However, the experienced Kiwi quick had the last laugh. He sent down an inswinging yorker to which the southpaw had no answer.
Jamieson celebrated animatedly. He pumped his fist in the air and then screamed almost in the face of the batter before clapping fiercely while maintaining eye contact with Sooryavanshi, who didn’t give any reaction back to the bowler.
RR vs DC: BCCI sanctions Kyle Jamieson for aggressive and provoking celebration of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s wicket
The match referee Rajeev Seth has sanctioned Kyle Jamieson with a demerit point for his celebration on taking Vaibhav’s wicket.
An IPL press release stated Jamieson has received a warning for breaching Level 1 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials.
The pacer breached Article 2.5 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct for “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from another player in the match.”
The BCCI argued that Jamieson “was found to be close to him (Sooryavanshi) in an aggressive manner, which could have provoked an aggressive reaction from the batter.”
The fast bowler admitted to the offence and accepted the demerit point.
Meanwhile, KL Rahul was handed the Man of the Match award for his blazing knock of 75 runs off 40 balls. Delhi completed the chase with five balls left.
With this victory, DC have now acquired 8 points in 9 matches and sit in the sixth spot on the points table. RR remain in the fourth position, with 12 points to their name in 10 outings.
Both teams will clash again on May 17 in Delhi, where another round of Sooryavanshi vs Jamieson could be on the cards.
