Wankhede Stadium is the home ground of Mumbai Indians and is located in Churchgate, Mumbai. It was built in 1975 and named after Barrister Seshrao Wankhede. The stadium was completed in a very short time of less than six months for a Test match against West Indies.

It has a seating capacity of around 33,000 fans. It is owned by the Mumbai Cricket Association and designed by architect Shashi Prabhu. The stadium has two ends: Garware Pavilion End and Tata End.

The ground has stands named after Indian cricket legends. That include Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Vijay Merchant. It is also known for high-scoring IPL matches. And remains one of the most iconic cricket stadiums in India.

This stadium has hosted many important matches. Like the 2011 Cricket World Cup final, where India beat Sri Lanka to win the trophy at home. It also hosted the final match of Sachin Tendulkar’s international career. Wankhede was built after a dispute between cricket associations over ticket sharing. It was completed in the 1970s. It was named after S. K. Wankhede.

Wankhede Stadium Pitch: A Bowler’s Nightmare

Wankhede Stadium is widely known as a batting-friendly ground. High scores are common here. And many matches see teams crossing 200 runs. The pitch has good bounce, and the fast outfield makes scoring easier.

In IPL 2026, the first two matches at this venue saw all four innings go past 220 runs. This shows how tough it is for bowlers when conditions are flat.

But the pitch is not always the same. In IPL 2025, it was slower and helped bowlers who used cutters and smart variations. One captain even called it a “tricky wicket” after his team struggled to score.

Overall, fast bowlers still take most wickets here, around 70%. Spinners find it harder, especially in the second innings because of dew, which makes the ball slippery.

Because of dew, teams usually prefer to bowl first after winning the toss. Chasing becomes easier, and many matches are won by the team batting second.

Wankhede Stadium Key Features

Wankhede Stadium is in Mumbai near Marine Drive and has been a key cricket venue since 1974. It was designed by Shashi Prabhu and is known for its open view and modern cantilever roof.

The Stadium was built after a dispute between the Cricket Club of India and the Mumbai Cricket Association over match tickets. After the 1973 India vs England Test, MCA decided to build its own stadium. It was developed near Churchgate, Mumbai, and was designed by Shashi Prabhu & Associates with B.E. Billimoria & Co as contractors. It was completed in about 13 months and opened in 1975.

The first Test match here was India vs West Indies in 1974–75, which India lost. India got their first win at this ground against New Zealand later. Virat Kohli also scored a 235 here against England. Before the 2011 World Cup, the stadium was rebuilt with modern facilities. Seating, toilets, and fan comfort were improved. The capacity was set at around 33,108 after renovation.

After renovation for the 2011 World Cup, its capacity was reduced to about 33,108 seats. The stands are named after legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, and Vijay Merchant. The stadium also got modern features like cantilever roofs, better airflow systems, and elevators. It became more comfortable for fans while keeping clear views of the field.

The ground has red soil pitch, which gives good bounce and carry. The boundaries are short. So batters can score fast, especially in T20 games. The stadium has modern facilities. It has LED floodlights and new control systems for smooth operation. A new footbridge is also there. It helps fans move easily inside the stadium.
