It’s funny that a franchise that has earned its success on the back of plenty of experienced campaigners, so much so that until last season they were the designated ‘Dad’s Army,’ is now awaiting the availability of a 22-year-old.
But such is the state of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) right now in IPL 2026, and the impact that this cricketer can put on the match in a short period makes it almost a desperation plea to the team doctor and physio that Dewald Brevis attains match fitness soon.
After three matches, CSK are currently in the same position where they were last season: 10th. That is because they are the only team now with zero points; KKR have lost three matches but have one point due to a washout.
The five-time champions have endured losses of hefty margins: 8 wickets against RR, 5 wickets against PBKS, and 43 against RCB.
When is CSK’s next match?
CSK’s next match is against Delhi Capitals on April 11, Saturday, at their home ground, MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
In fact, CSK have two consecutive matches at home, and they would be hoping to use this opportunity to get points on the board and build some momentum.
Their problems start right from the top with the new opening pair of Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad misfiring: in the six innings combined between them, they have scored only 63 runs.
CSK have also been missing MS Dhoni and Brevis from the side, two first-choice players who would have added power and depth to the lineup that has so far included youngsters Ayush Mhatre, Kartik Sharma, and Prashant Veer.
Dhoni is nursing a calf injury, and Brevis has been out of action owing to a side strain.
CSK vs DC: Will Dewald Brevis Play Against Delhi Capitals?
According to the website RevSportz, Dewald Brevis is fit and will play on Saturday against Delhi. The website also said that Dhoni is “close to a full recovery,” adding that if he clears his fitness tests, Dhoni might feature in the April 14 game against KKR.
A few days ago, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming had hinted at optimism for Brevis. “We hope he is going to be right for the next game,” Fleming said earlier this week.
If Brevis plays, he is likely to slot in for Prashant Veer, who is an all-rounder but didn’t bowl a single ball in the two games he played this season.
Further, CSK may be tempted to bring in Akeal Hosein for Noor Ahmad, who has been ineffective so far.
