The Indian Cricket Team has won the 2026 T20 World Cup, beating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final. With this, they have become the most successful team in the format, becoming a world champion for the third time.
India took on New Zealand in the final of the 2026 T20 World Cup. The tournament was hosted by India, with some matches being played in Sri Lanka. This final was played at the massive Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
On what seemed to be a flat track at the start of the game, New Zealand won the toss and decided to bat first. For India, the pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson came out to bat.

Abhishek had been in despicable form in this tournament. 89 runs in seven games was in contrast to the excellent form he had been in in recent months. Sanju scored a half-century, after which he started smashing sixes. Ishan Kishan hit a half-century too as India reached the 200-run mark in the 15th over.
The 16th over was the Kiwi fightback. First, Sanju, after making 89 off 46 runs, which is the highest score in a T20 World Cup final, got out. Then, half-centurion Kishan was dismissed. Finally, team captain Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed for a golden duck.
A slowdown in the run rate followed as the incoming Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma struggled to hit boundaries from the get-go. Pandya made 18 off 13 before getting out, and India stood at 231/5 at the end of the 19th over. It felt like reacting to 250 would be a big ask.

However, Shivam Dube hit two 6s and three 4s in the final over to take the Men in Blue’s total to a mammoth 255/5 in 20 overs. By far the highest total in the T20 World Cup final.
While New Zealand batters had dominated South Africa in the semi-final, scoring about 13 runs per over is a near-impossible task, especially under the immense pressure of hashing in the final.
This pressure got to Finn Allen, who skied a ball in the very first over, but Dube put down a regulation catch. In the second over, Hardik Pandya was punished for this transgression and was hit for 21 runs.
Axar Patel, aka Bapu, was the saviour of the Indian Cricket Team once again, this time with the ball. In the third over, he dismissed Tilak Varma. The genius Jasprit Bumrah came into the attack in the fourth over and foxed Rachin Ravindra out. Axar took another wicket in his second over, bowling over Glenn Phillips as the Blackcaps stood reeling at 47/3 at the end of the fifth over.
Tim Seifert reached his well-deserved 50 in the seventh over after seeing his team’s top order fall in front of his eyes. This was to continue as Hardik Pandya bowled Mark Chapman in the eighth over.
Even Varun Chakravarthy, who was not having the best time in recent games, contributed as he dismissed Tim Seifert at the start of the ninth over. Seifert would end up being his team’s highest run scorer with 52 off 26.
The all-rounder duo of Mitchell Santner and Daryl Mitchell fought back at this point, taking New Zealand past the 100-run mark. The two also showcased some fine hitting and struck a few sixes.
Patel took his third in the 13th over, dismissing Daryl Mitchell. This was also Ishan Kishan’s third catch in the field today.
At the end of the 15th, the Kiwis were at 139/6, needing 117 runs in five overs. Jasprit Bumrah came in to bowl the 16th and shattered any morsels of remaining New Zealand hope, as he took two back-to-back wickets, dismissing Jimmy Neesham and Matt Henry. Bumrah took another in his last over, finishing his incredible spell at 4/13.
It was Abhishek Sharma who took the final wicket of this T20 World Cup, dismissing Jacob Duffy at the end of the 19th over as the Kiwis were bowled out for 159 runs. India won the 2026 T20 World Cup final by 96 runs, bowling their opposition out with six balls to spare.
For his sensational bowling performance, Jasprit Bumrah was named the Player of the Match. Meanwhile, the Player of the Tournament award was given to Sanju Samson. The Kerala wicketkeeper/batter finished as the third-highest run scorer of the tournament despite not playing all the games. He scored 321 runs in five games with an average of over 80 and a strike rate of over 199.
Several records were broken in this India vs New Zealand game. Not only did Sanju score the highest individual score in a T20 World Cup final, but he also became the third player after Shahid Afridi and Virat Kohli to score a half-century in the semi-final and the final of a T20 World Cup.
The Indian Cricket Team became the first side to not only win the T20 World Cup at home, but they are also the first ones to win this tournament thrice, while also being the first ones to win it twice in a row.
